Title: Help troubleshooting?
Post by: quattro1432 on August 09, 2016, 08:04:15 AM
Hey all, new to the motorcycle world, bought an '02 GS500 a couple months ago and loving it.

Been working well for me, but this morning on my way to work, I was in 6th gear going about 45 and I felt the thing die off. I revved it a couple times but got absolutely no response and it died as I rolled into a parking lot. Had trouble starting again - finally got going after I gave it a little gas. I was able to turn around and go back down the road a few hundred yards but it died off again. Repeated this process three more times until I got home. Sound familiar at all?

Feels like a fuel delivery issue to me - carb? Fuel line?

Vacuum lock. Check your gas tank first  (or try having the cap open a little).

Are you talking about opening the fill cap and listening for the "woosh" of air?

Yep. Usually it's just the vent in the gas tank that gets clogged, and cracking the cap open helps.

Hi quattro, welcome to the forum and congrats on entering the bike world!

This does sound familiar to me and so of course I have to ask the simplest of questions that has helped many people new to the GS... are you sure there's enough gas in the tank? When you look in there, it's deceptive... I was a victim of this myself when I first got my GS. Looks like there's plenty in there but you're actually needing to flip to reserve and fill up soon

Yeah, opened up the tank because my initial reaction was no gas but I saw some sloshing around so I assumed that wasn't the problem. Will fill 'er up and try again. Thanks guys.
