Title: Need GS500 Engine help please
Post by: Napz on August 11, 2016, 09:31:12 AM
First off, I want to say I'm complete newbie to these twin cylinders. I have experience with honda industrial engines (go kart racing) and some old v8's, so i'll do my best to understand. I recently picked up a gs500, I think, it has the code of M501 - 174400. This leads me to believe its 487 cc motor? Anyways I picked it up with the intention using it for my dune buggy frame. I just need some help and information if i'm missing any components and how to get it running. I'm going to need to get a fuel cell, but is gravity enough to feed these carbs or does it need the fuel pump? Any info you can give will be super helpful, I have ton of questions! I also grabbed the engine for 400$ so I'm willing to spend the time on it! I'll be adding pictures shortly!

Thanks for your time!

The GS500 motor is natively a gravity-fed system. There is no reason to install a fuel pump unless you install an automotive type inline fuel filter on the line feeding into the carbs.

Napz, I can't remember where I saw it (probably buggynews), but I saw a buggy that used a fuel pump to feed their motorcycle / atv engine. Since the fuel cell was mounted lower than the carbs, they installed a catch can or something higher up, with a fuel pump sending fuel to the catch can.

Might not be of any use to you, but your project reminded me of it. Good luck!
