Title: 1993 GS500E "upgrade"
Post by: cammaibbi@gmail.com on October 01, 2016, 01:03:34 AM
Hey guys,

Look I've run out of ideas so i came to the best place i can think of to get help without possibly being charged hundreds...
I bought an effectively "riced" gs500e of 1993. The tail light was changed to some trailer light and LED indicators were also installed, without relays and it seems as though the previous owner had the wiring re-done.

So what im asking is this: i bought an integrated tail light that should fit an '04 GS and a relay which doesnt fit, which doesnt really matter. I want to know if i should be splicing wires or something to fix it or just take it to a shop...

Well, you can solder in resistors to make the LEDs work.  So you don't really need the relay.

But I don't think the 2004 and 1993 share a common tail light.  Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC the pre-2001 had a square light and post 2001 had a rounded light to better match the updated bodystyle.  So it might not even fit.

How comfortable are you with wiring?  Can you read a wiring diagram?  Going into it and just splicing wires is a good way to make a bad situation worse.  But if it's not too bubba'd you might be able to clean it up as you go without redoing too much.

Hi cammaibbi and welcome to the forum!

Watcher is right, the earlier GS's had a brick looking tail light and then the later years went to a more sporty design... BUT I took a chance when I first got my bike and ordered the later style for my '98. It fits nicely although a tiny bit snug. I've been happy with it for the last 4 years so it should work for you too !

Good luck with the wiring problem(s)... have you done much wiring/soldering etc on vehicles before? Also if you can include any pics for us so we can see the wires, that could be helpful... hope it's not boogered up too bad !!

Thanks heaps guys, ive done a little soldering but not nearly enough to warrant exploring on my tail light...

Ill probably just save and go to an auto electrician 😔

Thanks so much for the help!
