Title: "Supersport-ish" fairing options for an 02' GS500E?
Post by: TundraOG on October 05, 2016, 05:01:50 PM
Hey guys.
This one is for a friend who also has an 02' GS500E. His is heavily modified - digital dash, exhaust system, turbo LED lights, etc.
He's looking to complete his look with a front fairing mask, to give his bike a sportier look that suits his aggressive riding style.
The general idea is something more or less like this:

There is very little information on this and similar fairings. Can someone please direct us to a website that ships these types of fairings worldwide? It's also important that it looks "sharp" and "modern" unlike the stock GS500F fairings with are fairly thick and big.

Would appreciate any type of help!

I have never seen fairings like that on a GS before, those must be custom or something... I've always thought the GS500F's fairings were sporty looking enough (if a little bulky). The only fairing sets I've seen are much more in line with late 80's/early 90's sport bike styling, not modern supersports like you show there.

To be completely honest, if your friend has an "aggressive" riding style, he would probably be better off on an actual supersport (if he has the experience to handle it, of course) than he would be sinking money into making a GS500 pretend to be one.

For the cost of getting custom fairings and mounting hardware made, you could probably just buy a used early 2000's GSXR600/ZX6R/R6/CBR600.

Cool beans!! Well they aren't the Airtech Titan fairings... or the Spec II... or those fairings we see from time to time on the earlier GS's...

I'd like to see more pics of that bike and hear about what all has been done. That chainguard looks awesome painted and shiny... never thought of doing that.

In regards to the websites, these are the only ones I have come across over the years that sell fairings for the GS:

http://www.spec2.com/index2.html

http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/suzuz/GS500Titan.htm

http://www.fastbikebits.com/product/1445/suzuki-gs500-headlight-full-fairing (this one is strange cuz the picture is not of a GS5 but that's what the listing says)

Those were the fairing sets I was referring to when I said that the only sets I know of were more in line with late 80's/early 90's sport bike styling in my first post.

The fairings in OP's post look to be some sort of modified GSXR fairings, the nose looks almost like its literally just a GSXR front cowl/headlight retrofitted onto a GS500 front end.

Oh I completely agree with you qc...!! Gotta be custom... and you're right, that nose fairing looks very gixxer... a lot like the one I put on my bike.  The fairings in the pic look nothing like those in the links... I just included the links because Tundra asked for a website.

Probably won't be at all helpful to this specific question but maybe in the future, someone doing a search will benefit from them.

You need to look in Europe for fairings like that. Germany is a good place to start. The bike has a much larger following there and consequently more after market parts are available.

I believe the fairing in the photo is from a Brazilian company that made very nice after market fairings for the GS500. The bike is still very popular there, as I think the 500cc size is appropriate for their roads.
I don't think the company making that fairing is in business any longer? I haven't heard of them since around 2009.

Edit: Nevermind, looks like they are still around:

From a previous forum post, Prices are around US$500 just for the tail section(complete piece, painted, etc.). So you are probably looking at around $1,000 or more for the full kit. That does not seem worth it to me.

IMO, OP would be better suited taking the $1000+ (and I think that's much too low of an estimate for the full kit, I would bet the full deal would be closer to $1500-2000 if just the tail costs $500) they would spend on these fairings, and just upgrade to an actual supersport. Sell the GS500, and use the money from that + the money you were going to spend on fairings and just buy a used GSXR or something. The actual performance upgrade there would give you way more for your money than a big investment into fairings that are only cosmetic.

Not to mention, if he ever decided to sell the bike, there's no way he'd even come close to making his money back. If it's just the "sporty" look he's going for, I'd buy an 'F'. My '09 was $1,700 when I bought it back in February, and the people you'd impress with these fairings are the same people that are already impressed by the look of my bike. People who don't know anything about bikes tend to think it's the same as a GSXR or the like. Just my opinion, FWIW.

Forgot to mention thaf I am from Israel and here bikes are MUCH more expensive than their US counterparts. My 02' GS's bluebook value is about 2600 USD, and I'vd payed about 2700$ for mine a couple years back.
Given the high prices, high insurance rates (I pay about 1600$ a year on my GS, and it's all about the engine capacity here. Anything over 250cc has the SAME basic insurance - so I pay the same price an owner of a new R1 would), not to mention the year-round riding season, bikes tend to have very high milage and old sportbikes are usually beat-up and worn (my buddy is looking to buy an 04 CBR600F4I for "just" 7300 USD.

So, no, a new bike sadly is not an option.

Are bluebook values different in Israel as well? Because an 02 GS blue books between $1600-1700 in the US.

In any case, $7300 for an '04 CBR is ridiculous. If those are the prices you are looking at to get a real sportbike, then I definitely see why you may want to try and "upgrade" a GS to look sportier. The brazilian fairings do look great, but it may be very difficult to get them from Brazil, especially since their website doesnt seem to work correctly (not to mention its entirely in Portuguese lol).

Would a naked-sport style be acceptable? Because mounting an "F" headlight onto an "E" front end is a pretty streetfighter-y/sport-naked look:
