Title: Valve problem all of a sudden?
Post by: phoenix02 on October 20, 2016, 03:13:09 PM
I went on a 300 mile road trip last week with my 2005 and when I returned, my idle was down over 500 RPM. (I had adjusted the valves in the summer which worked wonders with the idle.  it was the first time for the valves at 18K miles.  They were all tight.  After that, it ran like a top.)

It started spitting thru a carb and got hard to start after about 3 short local rides.  Now it won't start at all.  Last time I cranked it to ride, it made some foreign sounds like a chain or marbles.  And the starter put a strain on the battery and ran down really fast.

I just pulled the valve cover off and everything looks normal.  It cranks smoothly and no sounds.  I have 120 psi in the left side and 150 psi on the right.  Seems I have a leaky intake valve.

I'm planning on pulling the head without a manual.  Looks like the biggest pain is getting the cams reinstalled.

Is the route to go taking the head to a local machine shop and letting them tell me what parts they need and then ordering and waiting for aftermarket parts to arrive?

need more information , is bike all stock ?  did you check compression  cold with a couple drops of oil in spark plug holes ?  then  we can figure out from there .

Does the motor turn over by hand? Have you pulled either of the side cases to look for problems?

I'm kinda thinking starter clutch problems or sheared bolts where it attaches to the generator rotor, although that wouldn't account for the compression difference. How many miles are on the bike?

Spitting through the carb and metal sounds. I hope it ain't a stuck or dropped valve . Take the cam cover off and check if there is a depressed valve ( and no, valium won't work for the bike, but you might need it)
