Hello everyone, i just picked up a 05' gs500f with 7k miles as my first bike. Before buying the bike the owner told me it had not been run in at least a year. I'll start off with explaining the problem:
With the bike in neutral kick stand up clutch lever pulled all the way in
-installed new battery with trickle charger
-the bike takes a few cranks and then starts, i try to rev it up but it immediately dies
-i have tried spraying starting spray into the intake (after removing air filter of course) and this helps to get it to stay on maybe 1-2 seconds longer (making the longest time I've had it on 4 seconds)
-i have accidentally twisted the throttle a little too hard one of the times trying to start and it hit 7k rpms so it seems as though I'm just not getting a constant enough supply of gas
I have removed the gas lines and reattached them to the tank and petcock, there is a noticeable amount of green and brown gunk inside the lines. should i just start of with replacing these lines?
thanks for any advice, can't wait to start riding
If it's been sitting for a year or more, your carbs will be full of gunk.
Pop the seat and tank off (on the under side of the tank behind the tank-mounted petcock, there's an on/off circuit you can access with a flat head screwdriver. Turn this off FIRST before unhooking the fuel lines) and pull the carbs off.
At the top of this forum page, there's a great sticky on carbs, their parts and how to get to them for cleaning. I use Seafoam to soak the jets and other parts in and then blow them all dry with compressed air. I usually do this a couple of times before re-assembly.
thanks, thats what i was working on today.
a few of the jets, including the main were completely clogged. the amount of old dried gas on everything was ridiculous. i also took a peek at the valves and those were completely black and covered in gunk. bought new gas lines and plenty of carb/throttle body cleaner. the only problem i have now is one of the carbs has very soft screws and one of them got completely stripped, in the process of trying to remove that now. hopefully ill have it up and running tomorrow.
If you mean the screws on the float bowls, yes indeed, it's easy to bung those up. You might consider replacing those with allen-head screws. Those seem to be a little more resistant. A lot of us have to take these carbs apart multiple times in the course of owning the GS.
Starting a GS5:
-apply full choke, ignition, etc..
-push starter button
-when it starts DON'T TOUCH THE THROTTLE, allow it to rev up to 3k
-manage RPM between 2k and 3k RPM (according to manual, some people let it rev up to 4k and maybe you should if it has sat that long) using ONLY the choke lever, backing it up slowly
- after about a minute, ease it back to about 1,5k and ride away.. few blocks later, close the choke fully.
Is that what you're doing?
