Title: Spray Paint Recommendations (Rattle Can)
Post by: Mr. BIGGZ on December 17, 2016, 03:32:24 AM
Kicking off my build, what do you recommend for black spray paint that is durable and won't easily wear off?

Just respond with what you recommend for the following applications:

For the FORKS:

For the FRAME:

For the HEADERS:

Thanks in advance!  :thumb:

Forks and frame: appliance epoxy.

It takes a little longer to cure than normal rattle paint, and you really want to be wearing a respirator / cover your skin.

For the headers? Beats me..... I haven't found a durable coating yet.

I agree on appliance epoxy for the frame and fork. They also have a stainless steel color that is close to the stock fork color, kind of looks like shinier magnesium. You can get it at Walmart and it's quite cheap.

I used VHT flameproof header paint. No word on durability but it's reasonably standard among hot rodders and motorcyclists alike.

'Appliance' paint might be okay for toys, BUT, just don't expect any rattlecan paint to have anywhere near the finish, hardness, durability, and chemical resistance (petrol, oil etc) of 2k auto paints.

I've used the VHT Header paint on one of my GSs with good results.  The only downside for me was I used a matte black finish and it showed dust/mud/dirt really easily.
Always cleaned easy enough, and it stuck for the whole season.  After that I sold the bike so I can't speak for long term durability.
But I also painted it "right".  Sandblasted and degreased the whole pipe, and did like 3 coats.  Only used one can, though.

If you can have things powder coated, that would be your best bet for a long life. Good luck either way.

Don't paint/wrap the GS headers, just sand them down to bare shiny metal, and hit them with a polishing compound to make them bling, they will dull due to water but not rust.

As far as paint, my tank did okay for about idk year ish I think with what I did, but since then its been re-did. I used rattle cans again [fight me IRL if you got a problem  :D  :technical: ] I used a 2k High Gloss spray can. sure its 24 doll-a-roos a CAN. but its do-able with a single can.. but if you don't rattle can often or paint in general, 100% buy two cans at least. and careful who you buy from, and look at the made date on the can. 2k cans shouldn't be used if they are over a year old in general... because science stuff.

I'm about to repaint my tank for a 3rd time, because lol it fell over on a trailer. and it got a dent in the tank..  Probably going to use rattle cans with a 2k clear again as it worked wonderfully for me.

oh and make sure your 2k clear got some sort of UV stabilizer in it.

oh snap that stuff is cheaper! no option to buy a case tho? normally 6, that's what I did the first time. I have since then, used all 6 in various things... only if they made a leveler clear in a can, stuff is wonderful when you got 6 different colors/layers of painted graphics

+1 on the 2k clear over any paint for durability.

J_Walker, I don't know what you are talking about sanding the headers down to bare metal and expecting them not to rust. The GS stock exhaust rusts like no other.
You get about 5 years out of the OEM paint. You get a year or two with high temp barbecue/header rattle can paint.

The best thing for stock headers is an occasional application of rutland stove polish.

I'm late replying to this sorry about that.

I don't live where they salt the roads. my headers are bare metal, but I do ride in the rain a lot. mine aren't even rusty? they are sanded and lightly polished. but Florida vehicles should be sought after... that constant sand blasting and lack of salts [unless you live coastal, but even then..] prevents rust! I bet in Texas, and Arizona are the same deal.

AZ here.
I still pass old K-5 blazers and such on the road that, don't get me wrong, look old but are in good shape.

Back in IL a K-5 was either full of holes or completely pristine since it had been restored.

Rust still happens, but not until after the paint is sand-blasted away.  I'll see rusted out husks of vans or something on occasion, usually crashed out in the boonies somewhere where it's presumably sat for 30 years...

Old VW beetles still in service, 60s and 70s muscle cars that look like they have original paint on them, CJs...
