Title: My GS500F scrambler "Razorback"
Post by: Reaver on December 22, 2016, 10:56:39 PM
Long time lurker.

Rebuilt this from a stock 2005 GS500F at the start of the year. Mostly ride it off-road through State Forests etc with Sydney Desert Sleds.
Not going to bother with going into what I did, I'm sure you can see.
Btw: SV650 monoshocks are not bolt and go. Haha it's now 2" higher than stock overall (since those bush photos) which lets me clear most obstacles.

Check my tags #gs500scrambler and #builtbyreaver on instagram for build pics. Was fairly basic.

Bad ass!! Love the camo paint on the wheels, the true versatility of the bike being ridden off-road, and the fabrication of the belly pan and headlight mount.

Awesome job! You went a little further than I did with my 450 "scrambler".

I'm not on Instagram so not sure how to find the info... but how do you find the cooling for the motor with the solid bash plate and how's the chain clearance over the swingarm with the extra height?

I'm assuming the Sydney is here in Aus too by the looks of the photos? (In Brissy myself)

Just google "instagram tagged #gs500scrambler" or "instagram tagged #builtbyreaver" and it should come up in various ways.

The cooling's been fine so far. I have an acewell gauge, so i can keep an eye on the temperature too. Because it's an F, it has the oil cooler up front which helps. But the bash plate was a last minute thing before a ride, and I haven't gotten around to taking it off to drill a few holes, and also extend it down to where the centre stand mount is. (Centre stand's removed)

Chain's all good!

Yeah mate, Australia.

Awesome, good job well done! I kept all my suspension stock height (but replaced with Ikon) as I was concerned about chain clearance... but I also have a 450 rather than a 500 so it's all a bit different...

Cool thread. looks like a good trail rider. The issue I started with mine.. well one of them, the usability issue. is the exhaust run underneath the bike stock way, tends to cause me to get stuck cresting steep hills and such.. also the stock steering lock/stop is horrid for trying to make tight forest turns. stock handle bar height is garbage, good luck finding something that pulls far enough back I ended up buying a stock one, then having some custom ones bent up. from stock got them made 5 inches back, and an inch and half up. also once you get longer/higher bars, cutting the steering stop plate is A-okay. don't cut it completely off, just trim it. for going up hills/starting on hills. I still have carb issues at low RPM. but I did get an intruder 800 fuel pump to replace my leaky petrooster and it required a pressure regulator in order to work right. I have no gauge and never measured it. but I THINK its only about 4.5/5 PSI fuel pressure set.

The extra height I have allows the stock headers to stay.. the rear section is currently off whilst I bend and weld up a new one with a hotdog muffler and torque inserts.

Yeah, the steering lock isn't great.. I've also got some ProTaper SE bars for extra height when standing.. just gotta get some longer cables and brake line made up before chucking them on.

My carbs go alright after warmed up a bit. I get it serviced regularly though.

couple of things i'm not 100% on but on the whole sweet build dude  :thumb: rough, ready and all about function. been planning on making a similar sump guard but with perforated sheet for my street scrambler thing, it's cool seeing a gs that is more offroad bias than anything else rather than the likes of mine which is stuck somewhere in between. how do you find the high mounted front mudguard? like does it do a decent job stopping any water you come across spraying straight up as well? also your headlight assembly looks damn tidy like that.
