Title: Opinions on Paint for Project
Post by: lefty1615 on January 25, 2017, 10:44:37 AM
Hey folks,

So I've been tearing my bike down for the past 3 weeks or so, one stuck bolt and the engine comes off, last thing still attached to the frame. I'm planning the build to be somewhere between a cafe and a scrambler I guess, I know what its going to look like but I am not sure what category it'll drop into. I'll make a project post with pic and such once I get past the disassembly and cleaning stage (which on my 96 is a mountain in and of itself)

So I am planning on a black, silver (bare aluminum mostly) and gold colour scheme. The plan stands at:

Satin Black for the frame and swing arm(?)

semi-gloss black on the tank and some components tbd, possible gold detailing on tank, maybe a nice gold S on each side.

bare metal cleared block (if I can make it happen, suggestions for a clear would be awesome) with black covers.
Kinda like this one in concept http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=46552.0

and gold brake lines, chain, wheels and again misc parts tbd.

Think along this paint scheme, http://kickstart.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/guzzi-le-mans-1.jpg, but obviously not the gold frame.

SO.

my current indecision is between a metallic gold paint vs a gloss/solid gold paint. I orginally was thinking metallic but the girlfriend looked shocked when I said it so I'm second guessing myself. I thought I would get some other opinions on the metallic V solid as well as any comments you guys have on the paint scheme idea in general.

I have a buddy that paints his own cars/buddies a couple times a year so this will be a far step above a rattle can and small step below a pro job.

Cheers,

Lefty

IMHO:
Satin black 2K SS Paint for frame (if the frame is prepped well no need for primer as Single Stage can go straight on the metal and over remnants of old finish.
Not semi-gloss for tank (you won't get enough visual contrast between satin frame and semi-gloss tank, -it'll look like a mistake. Go either full gloss black or the same satin as the frame.
Def metallic gold detail with clear over it. Good if you can get a SS gloss metallic gold, then no need for clear.
Don't clear over the bare aluminium barrels. When it starts to blister/peel (and it will) it'll look disgusting! Super-clean bare aluminium looks just great and is dead easy to keep looking good. Super-clean bare aluminium, then polish the fin edges - ooooh nice!

Nothing on the block at all? I can get behind that for sure.

So the guy at the paint shop said a similar thing as far as prep. The paint job specially on the tank is more or less entirely intact. Is just roughing it up with ~400 grit sandpaper really going to be fine? I'm a little concerned about it as so many sources all over say prep work is 95% of the job. Should I at least get it down to the basecoat?

Yah was definitely looking at gloss gold regardless of metallic or not but I am 100% on the metallic with a little confirmation haha. I'll definitely think about gloss black, I'm not 100% sold but I'll definitely think about it.

Thanks for the tips!

NO! Just wet and dry over the tank lightly with - I'd use 600, just enough to provide a 'tooth' for the next coat to adhere to.
Try not to rub through to the basecoat colour, you just need a light rub on the existing clearcoat just crack the gloss off it. Then I'd go a couple of coats of 2k primer, then the black. (With or without 2k clear on top depending on the black you use). If you go for a satin, you can't use a gloss clearcoat, because it'll come up gloss, the 'depth' of the satin look will be determined by the clearcoat. It starts to get pretty technical here. There are matt additives that you can add to paints and clears to achieve the right amount of glass / matte.
One of the reasons to go for full gloss on the tank is that you don't need to worry about that matting stuff. It's either Gloss 2k SS, or 2K basecoat with gloss 2k clear over. No matte level/additives to worry about. And as I said previously, you'll get a good contrast with the satin frame.

Gold, like silver, are metallic colours by definition, there's no such thing as a non-metallic silver, because that would be a grey. With gold, a non-metallic gold could be something between a flat yellow to a yellow-ochre, maybe light brown, not a gold!

Noted, I'll be doing the prep work soon so I'll have this thread up in front of me when I do haha.

Yah the Satin is a SS. Well all of it is going to be a SS because that's what my buddy wants to spray.

Can I do a spray can primer? I'm fairly certain the paint shop had a 2K primer in a can but I might be wrong. Ideally I would like to have everything ready for the SS topcoats before I get to the guys place so all we have to do is the actual paint but I don't have the painting equipment myself, obviously.

This was my exact comment when the girlfriend suggested a non-metallic gold haha.

Don't know what your painter uses but my guy always used House of Kolor and that paint is amazing!

Expensive, but you get what you pay for.

They have a color called "Aztec Gold" that's pretty amazing.  Not the typical bright and sparkly gold, a darker and deeper gold.  Like Gold meets Bronze.
I always liked that color, never put it on any of my projects, though.

Closest vendor for them is a good 5 hours from me, don';t think I'll be able to swing it haha.

Too bad some nice looking stuff

Could always have it shipped.

That's what my guy did, ordered online.

Most of their colors are just mix your own.  They have a lot of candies and a lot of metallic bases, combinations of those in addition to primer color makes about a zillion different final colors.

This here was Galaxy Grey on black primer with Tangerine candy on top.  Made a dark almost red metallic orange.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/18/gs500newpaint3.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0igs500newpaint3j)

The chevron on the top was done in Orion Silver with some airbrushed water-drops.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/600/gastankcleared3.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/gogastankcleared3j)

This was an early project for him, so it's not perfect.  The clear "melted" the candy underneath and it bled a teensy bit onto the white lettering, and it turned the Galaxy Grey pin-striping to more of a subtle gold color.  Overall it came out awesome, got a TON of compliments on it.
Lucky enough for me since my guy used it as "practice" he only charged me the materials so all in all it cost me less than $200.

That stuff never looked the same, the angle, lighting, cloud cover, what it was next to, everything played a factor into the finish.

Here's overcast.

Lefty, whilst it's nice to see those expensive 'House of Kolor' paint jobs, my 'umble advice is just go with economical 2K automotive paints. Unless you're doing highly intricate colour finishes it's just dollars down the drain. Your colour scheme will be excellent without needing specialist paint. 2K primer should be fine out of a rattle-can (but I don't use rattle-cans so can't vouch for it. It's not a 'true' 2K chemically though, because 2K needs x2 separate parts, -the paint, and the catalyst (hardener). Should be fine.

The primer coat is A: to serve as a barrier that will ensure any previous finishes don't react badly with your new paint, and B: To build up a little thickness that you can wet and dry rub down to get a perfect smooth surface.

Cool thread! I've always wanted to try the 2K stuff. I will have a project some day where it will finally happen I just know it.

Watcher, I never have seen more than maybe one or two pics of your GS... that color was really neat!

Good luck with your paintjob Lefty... sounds like it's gonna look sharp

Holy shaZam!, 90$ american for a half pint! Yah thats a little rich for me and my 1000$ bike haha. I gotta say your bike is gorgeous but thats a paint job thats half the cost of my bike.

I'll definitely not be going for the absolute cheapest stuff but I'm looking at stuff thats more like 40-60$ a pint haha.

Appreciate the input guys, I'll make a post with the process and stuff when its all said and done. Should be late march or so I expect with the frame mods and such I need to get done first.

Now, bear in mind the HoK stuff is concentrated.  IIRC it's 2:1:1 with the activator and reducer.  So that pint makes a quart.
So in actuality you're looking at about $60 a pint...
Not all colors cost the same, either.

My guy charged me for materials and waved the labor and it only ended up being around $200.
$200 paint on a $1000 motorcycle isn't that bad.  $200 for a paint job is pretty damn good.  Having it done at a shop using cheap Duplicolor would cost more...

That being said, there's a lot of good paints out there that are cheaper.  I just wanted to share my experience with HoK.
100% recommended.
