Title: Will the rack for "old" GS 500 model fit the "new" model?
Post by: artiskokken3 on February 06, 2017, 01:07:58 PM
Will the top box rack for the "old" GS 500 model fit the "new" model?

I am looking at a top box rack that is secured in two places - to the side of the mud guard and to the frame.

So... Will it fit?

I don't think so.

I suppose it depends what you mean by "old" and "new".

A rack for a '88-00 GS500E might fit a '01+ GS500E/F.

A rack for a 4-cylinder '79-82 GS500E probably won't fit any '88+ GS500.

IOW a rack for this:

Probably won't fit this:

Hope this helps.

By the "old" model i mean a rack from for example a '91 GS 500. I got the '07 GS 500 which has a slightly different bodywork on the tail compared to the older ('91) GS 500.
I have found a guy with a rack that fits his '91 but wanna know if it fits my 07' before making him ship it to me :)

Ah well in that case, it depends on the rack.

In general, no. The plastics are significantly different, '01+ being much wider.

If the rack only mounts at the grab bar mount points, then maybe. Or with little modification.
