Title: Help, my gs500 not running
Post by: april83 on March 05, 2017, 08:45:20 AM
So, I have an 07 gs500 and just put a new battery in it.  The lights come on and it cranks but the bike won't turn over completely.  Before I put the new battery in I was able to get the bike on and was running.  I'm new to working on bikes and need help!

Sounds like it may have hydrolocked. Pull the spark plugs out and try it. If you have fluid spitting out the spark plug holes, bingo, you were hydrolocked. Spray some wd40 or other penetrating fluid, let it sit a few mins and repeat, so you're replacing some washed off lube from the cyl walls.
Cool.

Could be a faulty safety clutch switch?

Where is the safety clutch switch located?

If it tries to turn over but not turn over fully its not electrical. Unless its a bad battery. New yes, but those can be bad too.
But if it wont crank at all - as in starter doesn't spin - then clutch or neutral or side stand switch.

Clutch switch is @ the clutch perch, and you have the clutch pulled in ??? Suzuki's wont crank without clutch being pulled in.

Cool.

Yes, I know the clutch has to be pulled in lol I will check the new battery to make sure it's not bad and check the clutch switch.

Check kill switch by right grip.

So we understand the situation properly:

The bike was starting and running fine, then you put a new battery in, and now when you press the starter button, the starter motor fires, but the bike doesn't run under its own power? Sounds to me like the new battery you installed is either not charged or faulty. Take it to an auto parts store and have it load tested and if it fails, replace it.
