Title: Petcock Vacuum Line Question
Post by: Jim Moore on March 09, 2017, 08:00:29 AM
Hi Guys,

I'm trying to chase down an air leak on my 2001 GS500E. The PO did several modifications to this bike so I have some questions. There is a vacuum port on each cylinder, for balancing I assume? Which cylinder does the vacuum line to the petcock attach to? Mine is hooked up to the right cylinder looking forward). The book says to take the "cap" off the right cylinder, which kinda leads me to believe that port is capped and the vacuum line goes to the left cylinder. The vacuum line routing makes it look like it goes to the right cylinder, but I want to make sure it's correct.

Those ports on the top are only for balancing the carbs. They should be capped.

The vacuum port for the petcock is on the inward-facing side of the aluminum body of the left carb. The right carb has an identical looking fitting but it's internally blocked.

If you don't have a cap on the petcock vacuum port and the petcock is not connected there then it'd be a huge vacuum leak.

HI again guys,

I can see a port on each carb.. They point up at about a 45 degree angle. You're telling me that those are the balancing ports and there is another port for the petcock vacuum line? I don't see anything that looks like that. Is it visible with the carbs on the bike (tank off)?

My manual shows exactly what you're describing, but I don't see it. Was there a change in the 2001 carbs?
