Title: No spark but everything else is good?
Post by: MarcoHansen on April 16, 2017, 04:02:02 AM
Hi, Im new to this forum, my name is Marco and I have an old gs500 from 1991. One day I was driving home from work and suddenly the engine just completely turned off. It hasn't made a single spark since.. Aside from sparking, everything is good. This is what I've checked so far:

-   1. Sidestand and ignition switch has been bypassed and not bypassed, didn't make a difference.
-   2. Side stand relay has been tested and it has continuity when applied 12v, also tried bypassing it
-   3. Resistance measurement signal generator (326 ohms and 331 ohms, according to manual, OK)
-   4. Resistance measurement in primary winding ignition coil (5,3ohms and 5,3ohms according manual, OK)
-   5. Resistance measurement between input terminals and sparkplug cap (secondary winding ignition coil) 13.9kOhm and 13.6kOhm (18-30kOhm in manual... so a bit low)
-   6. Voltage at CDI is almost same as battery, so CDI is fed
-   7. Continuity between CDI ground and ground on engine, OK
-   8. Continuity between CDI and ignition coils and signal generator, OK
-   9. Spark plugs are new, and different ones have been tried

A few things weirds me out:
-   Could it be some bad ground? Best way to check this?
-   I can't measure any continuity on the three pin diode, but when I install it the sidestand relay clicks and neutral lamp turns on, so it should work..
-   Sidestand relay heats up a bit

Before I go buying new parts, do any of you have some suggestion for me? (Im no mc motorbike mechanic, but I've tried repairing a fair bit of bikes and Im really willing to learn)

If not then next step is probably to try another CDI, ignition coils and signal generator (pick up)

Someone more electrically inclined will be along, but I should mention there's also a clutch disengage switch that may be causing a no-crank no-spark if it is faulty.

It's not getting spark on either side? Based on the low (ish) secondary coil readings, I would've guessed you spark plug wires need the boots pulled off /trim them 1/4" / reinstalled. But the chance of both plugs not getting spark at the same time because of bad wires is slim.

Are you sure the plugs are getting the signal from the signal generator? Maybe a loose wire on the right side of the engine?

Thanks for all the ideas   I checked my CDI on a another bike and the bike wouldnt turn on, so thats honky dory! Im on my way to get a new one now, but they are not cheap, so I was wondering why do they break down? Any reasons why mine would break that I could check and prevent, would be freaking sad to install a new one and fry that one too  :dunno_black:
