Title: RUNNING TUBE TIRES ON THE GS500
Post by: J_Walker on April 27, 2017, 11:47:01 AM
Anyone done it yet?

I F :technical: d up, Ordered shinko 705s from revzilla, didn't check the official shinko website to see if they where tubeless or tubed. well SURPRISE, I get tubed tires in the mail today!  :technical: I'm mad at revzilla and a little mad at myself for not doing more research on what they where. but in my defense, for the shinko 705s on revzillas website say NO where they are tubed or tubeless tires, and I assumed by reading reviews of people using the 705s on Vstroms that they where actually tubeless tires.. my mistake, I admit it. still. you don't go to the grocery store and everything you pull off the shelf you check for a recall order, you assume the store did its due diligence and would of pulled the recalled items off the shelves as soon as it became known. you see an item, go "that looks pretty good" an buy it.. at least thats what I do.  :icon_mrgreen:

anyway I know the whole needing "MT" for running tubes, is the code on the rim "J17M/CxMT3.50 DOT" the MT part, is that what im looking for? I don't have a way to take off the tires from the rim, but if someone already knows or has tried this, I wont bother and print out the return sheet from revzilla and bite my tongue.

Should be fine as long as you remove the valve stem and run the tire with a tube. The bead on a tube type tire is not strong enough to be run without a tube.

However, using that tire will removes the advantages of having tubeless tires in the first place (less unsprung weight, higher top speed ratings, and easy flat fixes). Also, you will spend as much buying a tube as you will on the postage to send the tire back to Revzilla.

I wouldn't do it since to me the hassle of getting the tube and everything is just as much a pain as returning the tire. If you decide to go for it make sure you pay attention to the speed rating on the tire because its probably lower than most tires appropriate for a GS500. A tube adds a lot of friction/heat.

gonna return the tire back to revzilla, and order some tires from bikebandit [at least they can post proper technical details that are freakin IMPORTANT.] the return postage; Pre-Paid Label   $7.45 (For US Domestic Use ONLY) I think pre-paid labels are if you qualified for free shipping.

what made my decision for me, was I called around motorcycle shops, and none of them would mount a tubed tire on a tubeless rim.. and I have no way of doing it myself. was already bad enough they where over sized.. maybe in the future, gonna get some 140 and 120 avon roadriders instead...
