Title: Starter runs with engine at all times
Post by: jfman on May 07, 2017, 08:41:51 AM
The starter on my gs500 went out.

I pulled it out and I took it apart at it fell to pieces on my work bench.

Ordered a new starter, put it in and when I went to start it the bike fired right up but I noticed that the starter was running with the motor. Shut it off and fired it back on and sure enough it did it again.

So what is causing this?

Was it me when I slipped the starter on? I just threw it in there but I guess I was supposed to remove the bendix/started clutch from the left side of the motor as well?!

That has happened before - its called starwalts disease.
Your started clutch is locked. Yea that sucker is like a 10:1 reduction if the started cranks the motor. The other way round its a 10:1 increase. 1000 rpm engine = 10,000 rpm starter. No wonder the old starter disintegrated.

You gonna have to get a new starter clutch before you centrifugal force this starter to bits too.

Cool.

Pulled the magneto cover and sure enough, the one way clutch is seized.

Pulled the flywheel bolt...

Now the god da#n flywheel wont come off. I threaded a large axle bolt into the flywheel itself, slipped a wrechn on the head and am pounding (ouward) to get the flywheel to come off but no dice.

This GS is truly testing my limits on patience.

You really need a proper puller to get it off (as the actress said).
You can make one, not too hard. The last one I pulled wouldn't come off the taper even with the correct puller and lots of the right wording.
But I left it under tension overnight, and a little tap with a hammer the next morning had it off with a lovely 'crack'.

You need a sliding hammer. Again starwalt modded a dent puller to do the job. I fabbed up one from scratch. What you need is a front axle bolt that fits that thread in it. I guess you could use a puller for it too. But sliding hammer is supposed to be the right tool.
Cool.

I got it off by hitting the inside of the washer on the head of the axle I had threaded intot the flywheel with the ears of a construction hammer.

Came clean off. But that axle is now beat to hell.

NOW: I thought the clutch rollers were seized to the ring gear but it was not. The ring gear is actualy seized to the crankshaft.

How to remove it? and witht he crank be damaged from this? How the heck did this happen anyway? The bike has been taken apart for head swap and it was not seized before the head came off...
