Title: Choke kills bike after installing DJ kit?
Post by: Jagged on May 13, 2017, 02:28:13 PM
Hey I installed a stage one jet in my 04 gs500, I have a yosh mid pipe so as per the instructions I put in the DJ128 main jets, the pilot jet and have the e-clips adjusted to groove number 4 from the top.
and from what I can tell the bike is running fine, smooth power delivery no sputtering no black smoke or gas smell to indicate she is running excessively rich although the mixture screws are at the 3 turns out called for.

however, when I pull my choke she instantly dies and wont start with it on - although she will start just fine with it off.

Is this working as intended due to my larger pilot jets or should I be doing more in depth tuning?

What's your elevation/climate?

If it will start without the choke and dies WITH the choke it's a rich idle circuit, pilots too big perhaps.
It should ALWAYS require choke for a cold start.

Have you had it warm yet?  Set the idle?

yes. she warms and idles great, in a way its so easy to start that I almost don't want to need to use my choke.  altitude in Calgary is  1,045 m (3,428 ft).

But if that is not the intended effect of the pilot jets I should stop being a lazy bastard and pull the tank off, swap the pilots to stock and turn in the mixture on one cylinder by quarter turns until that cylinder begins to miss then back out and repeat the process on the other side, correct?

IIRC most settings are done @ sea-level and as you climb up the air thins and you automatically enrich.

Really a plug read will give you the best indication, but you might try sinking the screws and backing them off one full turn and see where that puts you.

well. odd. one good one a little dark with carbon fouling. Did the hillbilly synchro check and both cylinders idle at the same rpm on their own. funnily enough I tried the choke again, she didn't die just hung out at 3/4k rpm

Im worried about my right cylinder - could this be indicative of compression problems? I don't have a gauge on hand to test her although I think I should go get one.

Compression?  I can't say.  Could just be the carbs aren't balanced properly and one has a slightly richer natural state than the other.

allright, I'll balance them exactly and swap the pilot jets, see how that runs many thanks brother

Does the DJ kit come with pilot jets? Mine didnt. I'm running 128 DJ mains on my bike with a lunch box filter and a very open zorst. I think you should put back the standard pilots and try the 118 or 122 mains. The 128 mains are stage three on my DJ instruction sheet and way too big if you are running a stock air box.
