Title: Carb problems 2007 gs500 f
Post by: Gcook57 on June 01, 2017, 05:02:04 AM
After cleaning and blowing out the carburetors on my 2007 GS500F thinking the Jets could be clogged because of the low power and no top end and sporadic idling it was putting out , I found out a couple vacuum hoses weren't hooked up to the right spots after switching some vacuum lines I finally got vacuum to the frame petcock( I was running it on Prime) and now it seems to have excellent mid-range and top-end ,...idling is a different story it seems to be a little hard to set and get a smooth consistent 1500 RPM idle I put in new spark plugs and air filter but it seems like if I let it idle for about 10 seconds or more then crack the throttle in neutral I get one pop like a small backfire  before it revs up I posted about this and Watcher said that it sounds like a lean fuel condition and suggest that I adjust the idle  mixture screws what when I took the carburetors apart I didn't notice any mixture screw then I read somewhere where they are nonadjustable or the holes or plugs so you can't get to them is this so? does anybody know where the idle mixture screws would be located I was told to and a half turns out after they seat very lightly. Do you need any kind of special tool to get to these mixture screws it seems to me if I could get it to idle good I would be all set any suggestions to get these carburetors fine-tuned would be greatly appreciated ... would disconnecting the pair valve  and covering the holes  with plates have any positive effect on the performance or would I be wasting my time ...Thanks Watcher for your help so far... I'm really looking forward to getting this bike on the road but I want to get it running right so I don't get stranded on the road somewhere I want it as close to 100  hundred percent reliable as I can get.. any help would be greatly appreciated .Thanks

i think your pilot jets are still not totally clean. remove the jets from the carbs, blow them out, and hold them up to a light to look through. you should see a round smooth hole, no edges or crud inside. if not clean burn the paper off a twist tie and pass the wire threw it a few times and check again.pilots are the smallest and have to be perfectly clean to work properly, especially on the gs500 as they run lean from new.

This required a whole new topic?

I find that those 01 and later pilots clog up rather easily. And they usually have a gel like goop (water+dirt+gas = goop) that is transparent to light but not to gasoline .... grrrrr you can see through it, but gas wont flow easily through it.

Take a look at the thread below to see where the mixture screws are. There may be a cap of some sort covering them. Drill it out (CAREFULLY) with a small bit, then screw in a sheet metal screw and pry it off. If you haven't removed them yet you need to take them out and clean the passages. There is a tiny o-ring at the bottom that is easy to lose.

Wire??...... in a brass jet??  FFS!! :dunno_black:

Use something plastic, no chance of scratching the jet internally

Or......drop the dirty jet in a pan of boiling water for 15 mins.

It takes a lot of finger strength to cut brass with a steel wire really. Even with a drill bit you will likely not do much damage unless you were using a pin vice.
Yea we have some gorilla's out there in the real world. True. But it needs to be king kong crossed up with Godzilla to damage the thing.

I've always had success with compressed air. Maybe the OP is getting confused when people say blow out the pilots? I've had pilot jets still blocked after just blowing on them in a reverse direction with my lungs - compressed air from a air compressor is much better. Just make sure you hang onto that pilot really tightly!

Hey, It is called a "pilot jet" for good reason ... and to help us along the old style was even shaped like a rocket.
