Title: Rear Shock rebuild
Post by: Buddyboy on June 03, 2017, 04:04:32 AM
Hi I'm a new member from the UK. I'm currently restoring a 1989 GS500E.
I need some help / advice on rebuilding the rear shock and repainting it. The top rubber has perished too.

Any help would be appreciated.......

Thanks

Buddyboy

Just replace it. It's not worth the time or expense to rebuild.

Not much you can do with them.

You can get the spring off with a pair of clamps if want to clean and paint the parts but the shock itself is sealed and the top bush is not available as a spare part.

Breakers yards in the UK are full of GS5s and there are plenty of parts going on eBay. You won't have to look hard to find a good used one.

Hey Buddyboy, Most people go with a yamaha R6 shock i believe. It's a way better shock than standard and should work pretty well on the GS if you tune it properly.
