Title: Painted my 96 GS500E!
Post by: mysho22 on June 19, 2017, 05:20:41 PM
Welp, I did it.

Finally took the plunge and did what I've been saying I was going to for several months now. I've only owned my Goose for less than a year (September of 2016) and already I've made him completely mine. After about a week of sanding and sanding and priming and sanding, I've finally finished. So without further ado, here's some cool pics of my new galaxy themed Goose.

I've got a bunch of pictures of the progress if anyone is interested in that, too. But yeah, for my first time painting I think it turned out pretty well. I'm a proud lady  :D

Rattle canned it. Lots and lots of sanding and primer, black base with red, green, and blue on top free handed. Used white for the comets with a little circle thing I had, and used paper and glitter rattle can for the trails. The stars are white rattle can applied by soaking a toothbrush and flicking it with my finger! Then lots of clear coat. :)

I plan to do a tank in the future. I'm trying to keep my black set of fairings and my tank nice just so I have the spares/can trade them out if I want, but if I can buy a cheap and usable tank soon I'd like to do that too. Fender is a definite maybe :P

Marvelous!!! Excellent point about keeping the tank and fairings for spare/trade. Fenders are pretty cheap and plentiful on eBay... I've purchased at least 3 myself over the years to mess with (mainly because it's a PITA to have to remove the front wheel just to remove the fender and I wanted to make one where that wasn't necessary....)

Hope to see more, for sure! :star: :star:

Hmm....maybe I'll do that then! My current one is a little damaged and sad looking anyway, maybe its time for an upgrade.

Well that's original. Class look. I'd like to see it with tank too.
I think it would increase the price you could sell it for.

Thanks! I haven't seen anything like it, so I decided I'd be the (possible) first, lol. I've decided I'm definitely going to do the tank as well, but I'm going to wait until towards the end of the summer or a time I can't ride anyway to work on it so I'm not missing any riding to work on it. Thanks for the support!

Fender:

All the parts:

On the bike!

You may notice a small scratch on the fairing in the last pic. I was a dummy and scratched it by accident, but it all works out because a friend of mine is painting a little spaceship with a cat waving out of the window for me there! That'll be the last thing, and it'll finally be done.

My anniversary of owning Goose (my first bike!) will be on the 11th, so just before a year of owning him and he's finally completely been made mine. :) I'm so proud!

This is a wonderful update!!! I love it... and the (future) kitty in the spaceship... omg that is perfect :D :D :D

Happy bike anniversary!!! :woohoo:

With the skrungy disaster paint job, I once had an unexpected result when I painted one of my tiny race bikes. It was a little Yamaha and I was trying for Yammy racing Blue /white. I mixed some paints together to get as near  the colour as I could and applied it over an enamel undercoat. It went all wrinkly. BUT it was a very aesthetic wrinkly! Sort of like leather. So I left it. Got all sorts of good comments about it , but no idea how or why it went that way, so I can't repeat it.
On off paint jobs are a fun way to go. Like your's.

Thanks to both! I'm so happy with my bike it's crazy. Every time I get the slightest compliment on it I become incredibly proud all over again. Now I just need to take a ton of bike selfies....

I am pretty much no fan of any repaint. But you did start out with one fugly set and turned it into the milky way.
My wife has leggings that would pretty much match that BTW.
Cool.

Great job Mysho!

I dunno what kind of clear coat you used, but the majority of rattle can clears are not able to withstand gasoline. The one I always recommend (and have used for years) is Spraymax 2k Clear. Not cheap (about $19 a can, figure 2 - 3 cans for all your painted parts), but is insanely durable!

Since it's a 2 part paint, you have about 12 hours to use the entire can once it is mixed. And I saw the respirator but I have to mention - Spraymax is uber nasty for your lungs.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll absolutely pick some of that up and clear coat at the very least my gas tank again, and possibly other parts. I appreciate the advice!

Actually I am very disappointed in how anything stands up to gasoline. Not powdercoating not paint, nothing really does.
Cool.

ain't that the truth! and the more careful you try to be the more likely you are to have a spill  :icon_rolleyes: :icon_lol: i've seen petrol resistant lacquer in a few shops but i think it's got slightly different characteristics in that it goes cloudy quite quickly with UV so it forever needs a polish... from what I've heard anyway.
