Hi all
I was attempting the SV650 upgrade on 97 gs500 and it looked like it needed more than just shortening and drilling the bottom U section. I checked on line and learn the white ones (as I have :icon_rolleyes:) are not suitable (only yellow) Can anyone suggest why that it is? I have a feeling the white one might fit if you clearance some of the U section that looks like it might interfere with the linkage - is that it?
Cheers
J
Ok so I took another look at this tonight trying to figure out why the white SV shock won't fit. Obviously it's longer that the stock GS unit (as is the yellow one) but also I not from the side view the U section is almost 2.5 mm wider (nearly 30mm compared to 27.5 stock) which I guess could be why it fouls the linkage. If anyone has a yellow one to measure that part it could be useful to know.. oh yeah and maybe the outside diameter of the spring in case that's also different.
Cheers
Hi a100man,
I'm surprised nobody replied to this with any input... could you provide some pictures of the white shock?
I'd be curious to see the difference as well since I've been reading up about shock swaps lately.
Dunno if this would help but here is the wiki link with additional information on the subject... also am adding this for people in the future who might be searching:

Thank for the message,I did already receive some helpful PMs so I don't feel too unloved. The bike is a bit of a beater to be honest and is a donor for a Dual Sport project which is why I'm looking to change the rear shock - I'm trying to emulate the famous (?) Rattonshaw bike. I have swapped the front end (still some work need on the stem I think) and I have a new Mitas E07 to fit on the back.
This is what it looks like right now..

For posterity, in case anyone wanted the details.
The SV650 shock with the yellow coil: the metal part of the lower clevis is indeed 27.5mm wide. Regarding the empty space in between, it's about 42mm wide from outside of plates, 30mm wide from inside of plates.
