Title: Fuel overflow while in ON and idle problem
Post by: BadBatzMaru on February 28, 2004, 09:20:06 PM
hey all,
today finally got the bike running again for the first time since november. Over the winter I rejetted and am now having some carb problems.

First off, I cant get the idle set properly... If I set the idle to 1200 ( I set it  after the bike gets warm), it stays at 1200... then if I blip it and take it up just a few hundred rpm (anywhere below 3000) it comes back to 1200 slowly, very slowly... if I rev it above 3000 it slowly returns but only to 3000 and sits there.... after takin it for a quick spin (the ride seemed fine at higher RPMS, no losing power)... after coming to a stop I noticed that a fuel puddle had collected on the side of my bike... it was spurting fuel from the carb overflow hose... (petcock is on ON position, not prime)...  after I parked the bike, and shut er off, the fuel stopped sputtering out after a bit... there is no fuel spillage without the bike running..  I tried to see if it was any different while on prime, but it was tough to tell as fuel was already spilling out... seemed like no difference.  Please help with any thoughts suggestions...

thanks

Sounds like a float valve issue. It's not controlling fuel flow to the bowls, allowing them to overflow.
It stops when the motor is off because the vaccum petcock (frame) stops flowing fuel.
Try knocking on the float bowls while it's running. That might jar the floats and unstick them. If not, you should pop off the carbs and check the floats.

The hanging rpms also suggest a lean condition.  But do what Bob said to do first  before going in to change anything....

(Extraneous information...At the time I finished My post both Bob  and I have 317 posts each.... Spooky...... of course that will change soon...but RIGHT now it's the same number...heh..)

IT WORKED!!! :)  :)  :)  :thumb:

I was about ready to take the carbs off again but just knockin on the float bowl a little was enough to fix the stuck valve... then I was able to set the idle correctly.. Thanks so much Bob, never would've thought to just knock on 'em a bit... you saved me a bunch of time and effort!

Now Jared and Bob B are tied at 318... You only have 318 Jared... You are awfully quiet.
Cool.
