I'm currently in the process of doing a Gs500 scrambler build, and all has been going relatively smoothly until now :icon_lol: I have installed a SV650 shock to get more height out of the rear, and don't have clearance with the spring on the swing arm -I'm not sure if perhaps the hole wasn't quite drilled further enough up the lower mount, but even if it was another 2-3mm I still don't think it would have enough clearance. The pre-load on this shock is set about halfway currently.
Has anyone had issues with this in the past? From all my reading haven't come across similar issues

I cut a notch in the swingarm crossbrace and welded a plate over it to get the clearence.
So after another hour of swearing I realised that the hole I drilled is ever so slightly off centre, and I could flip the shock and it would give it clearance the other way...in saying that it is still about 1-2mm on the highest preload, and slightly more as the preload is wound down, so not a huge amount and I may still notch and weld a plate in as suggested.
Surprised I didn't come across this issue in the other threads I read with such tight clearances...although if I had drilled the hole slightly higher maybe wouldn't of been an issue at all :icon_rolleyes:
I did the SV650 shock replacement as well. It'll raise your bike up by a few inches, and I had to fab a longer kickstand to keep the bike from toppling over.
Ultimately went with an R6 shock that has much nicer damping and ride qualities, and drops the bike back to stock height.
IMHO. none of those piggyback shocks are an option with the airbox. And I really prefer having the airbox instead of a lunchbox.
Anyway, kat 600 89-96 shock is a direct bolt on, gets you a better shock all around and doesn't need removal of airbox.

Just for clarity - R6 shock only requires removal of air box for the install. If you get an 09 or later, you don't even need to do that for the install. I have an R6 with stock air box on an '04 GS.
However, if you want the added height without changing dogbones(you'd need shorter ones to get height with other shocks same length as stock), the SV650 shock will get you there - would likely add a solid 2" I'm sure.
