Check oil level [when the oil gets low the GS gets louder, its how you know its time for a change... ;) ]
Make sure you're running OEM spec sparkplugs.
and you're sure its a TICK and not a PING?

Anyone?
I am not hearing much of anything in that video.
Are you sure its coming from inside the engine? Could it be loose headers or something else loose on the bike?
How many miles on the current oil change?
Are you saying it sounds totally fine below 4,000 rpm? If so, that makes me think something somewhere is just loose.

I was going to reply that using car oil would be a bad idea, because motorcycle clutches would slip with all the extra friction modifiers etc... And if the clutch slipped at higher rpm's it could cause the noise?
But then doing some research on using car oil on bikes, it looks like it's not entirely forbidden.

Or is this opening up a whole new can of worms for another thread?

I use diesel engine oil in my bike. Just have to check that it is ok to use for wet clutches. Some machinery has wet clutches. This is what I use:
QuoteIt is also suitable for use in petrol and LPG engines as a mixed fleet oil and can be used in motorcycles with wet clutches. (http://penriteoil.com.au/products/hpr-diesel-10-10w-40-semi-syn)
Plus - you don't pay motorcycle tax on it. Obviously if you never ride your bike and do an oil change when you feel like it, it probably doesn't matter. I do 3 - 4 oil changes a year and I haven't had a problem with the above.
Awesome link Endo :thumb:
It's amazing how I know my way around the forum and the wiki but when I was reading up on oils, it never occurred to me to check the wiki for information like that  :icon_rolleyes:

can of worms has been opened MANY times lol. ive used car oils on bikes (specially the gs') without the clatter. maybe it was mentioned, but how many miles? m r kilomeoters?o

I wonder if perhaps it might be a valve clearance issue?

Tightened up the exhaust gasket bolts and that resulted in less engine noise. Still there, but less. Should I replace the gaskets? And while I am at it I can do the bolt mod, but I cant find the posts about it and what kit to use.

I remember reading somewhere that the exhaust gaskets are a one-time use thing. When I dug mine out they were terrible lol! Bought new OEM ones and at the same time replaced the rusty bolts with stainless studs and nuts (there's a link in my project thread about the kit I found on eBay and additional info on that). I also remember reading that after reinstalling the exhaust with new gaskets, it's good to check the bolts to make sure they are snug after the first ride.
Dunno if that'll help ya any, it's just bits of info I've come across over the years.

I've used the GTX without an issue. But if the bike oil does the job, go for it my friend, oils aside shouldn't have clatter AT ALL. You've succeeded inquieting it down, now its time to ssilence it Eh?

Not a problem at all! About halfway down the page:

CCT can be checked. with it properly installed and with valve cover removed - turn the motor over - either via the back wheel or the advancer (like they want you to do in the manual). But keep your eye on the part of the chain between the 2 cam sprockets. If it ever sags below the tops of those sprockets - your CCT is toast.
Having said that - your GS sounds pretty much normal or the sound is horrible in my laptop (which it does).
Cool.
Buddha.
the buddha is wise,. the buddha is powerful :D. could the cct be clattering against the valve cover, ( since sound is predominantly at top?)
