As some of you may know, I have had some problems with the GS over the last few weeks. Well finally we sourced the ignition sensor and I fitted it. So come last Saturday, my wife and I fired up the bikes and went for a great ride around some of the local bike haunts.
On out return we where about 5kms from home when my wife pulled the GS over and lets me know it is missing again --- JUST like when this gremlin 1st hit!!!!. Anyway I say just limp it home and I will take a look at it there. She took off and gave me the thumbs up, the bike was running fine again. But this was short lived as we approached a set of traffic lights to turn right, the GS missed then stopped, dead, nothing, no go. Naturally my heart was no very low as I thought we had nailed the problem, so we quickly swapped bikes so me wife could ride the Viffer home whilst I pushed the GS. A little up the road the GS did start to get heavy so I tried to start her again, and she fired up. Quickly I jumped on her and rode towards home only to get about 1km further and the bike just died again. Soo... gurus out there what do you think the problem was?

The bike was running out of fuel :) and needed to be switched onto reserve. Prior to the initial problem the GS ran on the smell of a rag. But I guess that after the fuel petcock was replaced, the carbs cleaned and fuel filter installed she now flows at the proper rate and fuel consumption has gone up (all done whilst chasing the ellusive missfire problem). So in summary the GS gets to live another day and don't forget to check the obvious cause 1st 8)

I spent 2 hours in the middle of a lake once on a jet ski that "ran out of gas"
My buddie (after 2 friggen hours!) came to find where the hell I went with his jet ski in the family boat. That bastard hopped on it, and flipped it over to reserve :oops: and rode around for another 1/2 hour!

HA! Same thing happened to me on my first long ride on the GS... sputtering, coughing, then nothing... I freaked out for the better part of an afternoon before I realized that I needed to switch to reserve. :oops:
I was hoping I wouldn't be alone :lol: Just glad we didn't call roadside assist, I would have lost all male ego at the point when the mechanic turned the fuel tap :oops:

I think I win the 'embarrassed as hell' award for calling a friend to drive 20 miles out with a pickup truck and truck me home before i figured it out. :roll: In my defense, when inspecting the bike I noticed a loose bolt on the rotor-cover, so I jumped straight to panic mode an never even thought to look in the gas-tank.
Happened to me first time on my bike....sputtered on the Williamsburg bridge on my way to Brooklyn....pulled over to what was basically a small space on the bridge during rush hour freaking out....wondering what was wrong with my brand new bike...i was cussin' and all that stuff. I called my buddy from the bridge and explained my dilemma. He thought i ran out of gas. I laughed and said "what am i some kind of idiot..???"
To make a long story short i placed a small label over my "reserve" knob that says "idiot"

Same thing happened to me when I picked up my bike from the dealer.
He told me that he had put tel litres of fuel in it which made think I could get approx 100 miles in before I needed to fill up. It never occured to me that 6 of those litres would fall straight into the reserve.
Fortunately, I have run out of fuel before and knew the symptoms straight away.
Still felt like an idiot though, sat at the side of the motorway switching my reserve on.
haha same thing happened to me on the way home with my bike last year from the P.O's. Sat there for a couple minutes and decided to try reserve and walah.
Moral of the story.... When you look in the tank and it looks like there is plenty of gas don't be deceived.
