Hello everyone. If like to start by saying thank you I bought an 06 gs500f this summer that wasn't running and got it running with a lot of help from threads here. My bike has about 12,000 miles on it. I put fresh gas and spark plugs in it. Cleaned the carbs changed the stator and oil. Now that it is running and on the road I noticed its hard to get it to go above 60 to 65. This is my first bike so I'm not clear on all the terminology but it seems that it's lacking in top end power. Any thoughts on what the problem could be? Other than not wanting to go fast i don't think there are any other problems. It takes a few minutes to warm up but once its running it idles good and seems fine. Thanks in advance
Does it accelerate ok from zero to 50 or 60?
There's a vent hose that can wind up facing front causing the bike to quit accelerating as speed increases. Maybe that's it. Someone more knowledgeable will come by and give more specific instructions about this. I've only heard reports so I don't have first hand experience with it.
If it refuses to accelerate past 5k RPM or so in any gear then it's likely carbs. Low float level or a sticking float needle would be my first guess. Severe vacuum leak causing slides to never come up could also cause this, or torn diaphragms etc. But if it revs fine to 9k in gears 1 to 3 and pulls hard up to 50mph then it's probably not carbs.
Yea it goes up to red line 1-3 gears and 0 to 60 is fine just hard getting past that unless I'm going downhill. Ill check that out thanks. Any other ideas would be appreciated I was thinking maybe its running lean just based on what ive come across here
Running lean won't cause that specifically. I'd say the vent hose thing is likely. Please someone else on the forum come along with specific instructions, or you can search and find info. It comes up from time to time.
It is de-restricted right?
(In the UK the GS can be ridden on an L licence as long as the carbs are restricted - just a couple of restricting discs in the carbs - easily removed)
Just askin'...
