Title: Where do you get your parts?
Post by: AstroPenguin on September 25, 2017, 01:06:46 PM
Hey guys! So I need to do quite a bit of work on my poor non-functioning bike...and work needs parts! (I'm ignoring my total lack of mechanical experience...)

I've been buying from Suzuki Parts House online but the shipping cost is a little high to use every time I need something small...though OEM parts are nice because they fit so perfectly...I'm looking st you, fuel lines.

Where do you get your parts? And do you need to match up years perfectly? I don't see 1994 parts often but I see other years for sale all over and it'd be nice to snag those if possible.
Thanks guys!

+1 to the OEM fuel lines, for sure!!!

I get all my OEM parts from motosport.com. I'm a super pinch-penny and every time I shop around, that site seems to always have the lowest price.

Other parts I get on eBay... and a few times over the years I've purchased from the For Sale section on the forum here.

There are some things that are interchangeable throughout the years of the GS... no doubt about that... but most things I'd always play it safe and get the exact year of parts. For your '94, you'd be pretty safe most of the time getting parts for an '89 up thru 2000 I believe.

The spare parts fairy... I just summon her by smashing 3 empty beer cans on my forehead.  :D

just order parts all at the same time, normally some sites have an X limit before free shipping, like do tires/brake pads/chain and sprocket. order things in advance to needing to replace them too.

bikebandit is the site I order my OEM's from.

If only I had this thing called foresight. I tinker...realize I need a part...order said part...tinker more...realize I need another part...cry. It's a really healthy cycle!

Thanks, I'll have to check them out! I'm currently looking for a carb rebuild kit, maybe they'll have a good one.

And that's good to know then, maybe the rare stuff I'll be able to interchange.

If you are not in a hurry, then your local Suzuki dealer can be a good place to go for a single part and not have to pay shipping. They never have the part you want in stock though, so you usually have to wait a week and then go back to the dealer.

For hard parts and electrical I usually find parts in good shape used on eBay or this forum.
For consumable parts I wait until a need a bunch of stuff and then order from bike bandit.
For non bike specific stuff like fork oil I go to the local metric bike dealer.

FYI, the GS500 hardly changed between 1989 and 2000. The only difference within those years I can recall (other than color schemes) is the front sprocket which got a shoulder spacer starting in 1994.
Don't worry about getting year specific parts as long as its 1989 - 2000 it will fit. My GS500 engine has a 2005 head on a 2006 bottom end with the starter clutch and generator rotor from a 1989. Some parts, like the aluminum shock knuckle on the 1989 GS500 will look different but still fit and function properly on other years. Anything 2001 and newer you need to do more research to find out if it will work without modification. Some newer parts do work though. For example, some random parts from a 20009 that would work on your 1994 include: The kickstand, the brake calipers, the rear brake pedal, the wheels, the swingarm, the forks, the footpegs, the cam chain tensioner, the centerstand, and any aftermarket exhaust.

My 05 GS500, has a 1999/or 96 head. I forget, its 199-something.

Rule of thumb is if you have a later model +2004. its compatible with the older models, -2004. Only little odd things like oil pump gasket, carb outlet size and boot size and such.
