Title: Electrical issues
Post by: ojstinsonjr on October 25, 2017, 12:36:01 AM
I hope someone can help.  My 2008 (28000 miles, garage-kept) GS500F is having electrical problems.  The speedo and tach lights have been flickering for years, but now, I get a frequent, lights-on (no dim) engine cut-out that happens randomly at all rev ranges and speeds with a back-fire re-ignition.  Battery is fine, charging, and connection to leads is good and dielectric-greased (as is everything else I could reach).  Not fuel, not air, definitely spark.  I have iridium plugs, and if it means anything, startup is enthusiastic and all other power issues are fine.  It is like someone is randomly hitting the kill switch.  When the bike is "unconscious" during one of these episodes, the headlight is out (notably), the starter is disabled, but the instrument cluster is not and turn signals work.  Then, out of nowhere, the engine can be cranked, and runs fine until it happens again.  This particular GS has always run very well and I keep the gas fresh, trickle charge the Li battery when not being used, and run it about 50 miles every week all year 'round.  Any help would be, well, helpful.

Kick-stand switch is my first thought. Might be worth seeing if it's gunked up or otherwise not closing properly, or maybe the kickstand itself isn't going up far enough to close the switch.
