Title: New handlebars - throttle and controls not staying in place?
Post by: kryptek49 on November 19, 2017, 01:37:40 PM
Hi,

I bought a GS500f on Friday, and everything about it is perfect.  :woohoo:

Only problem I've run into so far is that the previous owner installed Renthal bars - pics on imgur here: https://imgur.com/gallery/0q5zf

The right throttle and kill switch controls are not attached securely, and can rotate around the bar with a small amount of force - see attached the pictures of different positions showing what I mean: https://imgur.com/gallery/yPYu1

Is there an easy way to fix this?

I've read you can put electrical tape underneath the switch so the bar is slightly thicker and it wont move, however I have tried this and there is absolutely no gap between the bar and the controls for the electrical tape to sit in.  Meaning when I move it back into position it just scrapes the tape out the way.  >:(

Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance  :thumb:

inside the control switch, there should be a plastic "Knob" or nib on the inside that sits in a hole drilled into the handlebars, if no hole is there and its tightened down on the handlebars, that plastic nib is probably squished. but if not then you can drill a hole for the nib to slide into. and it wont spin around... OR you can take my method, and use a self tapping screw and drive it straight through part of the plastic housing into the handlebar... wont spin then!

Thank you, I believe my mistake was sliding the switch off the bar, whereas if I take the top part off I will be able to apply tape easily. I'll try to avoid using a screw just in case but thanks for the idea

Or just get/cut a strip of shim stock and put a turn around the bars where the switchblock is positioned, and tighten it up around the shim.
