Title: Start Trouble after 2month stand still

Heyho!

2 Months ago i put my 2006 GS500F away, cause i cant ride it till my licence upgreaded(in about 2 weeks). When i put it away 2 months ago, it started and ran/drove like new(last time it ran it was about 10C min and the bike has only done 3000km's).

Before i put it away, i took the battery out and put it on a smart charger, Filled the tank with gas and cover'd her up. Didnt take specific measures cause i wanted to start and maybe ride it up and down the driveway a couple times. Sadly i havnt gotten around to it till now.

Now its a bit colder than it was when she last ran, Tho at 10C she didnt have a problem to fire right up, now its 3-4C'ish. She turned over just fine but wouldnt start up, i tried till the battery went flat after 1-2mins. I tried turning the petcock to "Prime" but that was at the end of the battery's charge.

Any idea's why she's being a bit of a pain to start right now? The battery is recharging, once its back to healthy levels i'll check spark etc, but anything these bikes are known for, even after 2 month stand still?

(i've done exactly the same when i bought my Honda CBR125R and after 4 months of simmulair situation it fired right up  :dunno_black: )

Could be a dozen things. Charge the battery back up and try again with it on PRI. Make sure you give it 100% choke.

You are near the turning point on that gas. If you have old gas in the carbs then it is likely the cause of the problem currently. With any luck you can eventually start it and burn off the bad gas before it does much harm by more sitting. Fuel stabilizer would have been a pretty good idea but you'd have to do it before you stopped riding to ensure stabilized gas got into the carb bowls.

Your 125 is FI. You need to start this bike/ride it, don't let it sit or your carbs clog up.

Drain the gas out of the carbs....small quantity's of gas (carb bowls) go to crap faster than large quantity's (tank) even though both have vents to the atmosphere.

+1 to what Mr72 said. Make sure you are starting with the choke all the way on. If the gas was fresh when you put it away then 2 months shouldn't be long enough for it to go bad. If the gas was already a couple months old when you put the bike away then you may have clogged the carburetors.

You could try hooking the bike up to a car with jumper cables to be 100% sure it isn't a battery problem.

Thanks for all the info! Drained the cards, put petcock on prime and put choke fully open, after a couple of cranks it fired right up. Though it spiked to 4000 RPM and falls back to 0 and stalling.
Putting the petcock back on "On" fixed this, now it ran just perfect again!

Good to know that after a while of standing still putting the petcock to prime will help the bike start!  :thumb:

Its the old 2005 model(with carb), But i got that from a dealer, so maybe they added stabilized fuel before taking it home.  :dunno_white:

Glad it worked out....still wouldn't let it sit too long though.

BTW 4k RPM idle with the choke on is normal. Stalling isn't.

If it required prime to start after sitting then you have to wonder where the fuel in the carb bowls went. Or just leave well enough alone and wait for whatever that was to get bad enough to diagnose.
