Post by: chopperwoo on December 28, 2017, 11:24:23 AM
Hey guys so after picking this bike up which was stolen recovered but not logged on insurance it took me a little while to get it to run but with everything intact i had it running today now there is a tapping noise coming from the top of the engine does this knock sound like the valve shims ?

just had a look around youtube and found out its the cam shaft end play thats causing the noise is there a way to make it go away on the these 1993 engines ?. as was told it won't cause any harm but going to do the valve clearances anyway

Camshaft end play is loud as druck @ .25mm.
The thinnest shim they make is 1 mm.
Yea you got a long way to go. My 50K miler was barely worn to .35 @ 50k.
On the bright side, ear plugs are cheaper, and even cheaper is the look of pride = where a racket like that hardly slows you down.
Cool.

Copied from old post of mine:

I had the cam knock on both my 97 GS and my 02 GS, knocks only on warm engine and only at idle.  Pick up the rpm to a 1800-2000 rpm fast idle speed and it stops knocking and is never heard at riding speeds above a fast idle.

I ran 15W-50 Mobil 1 in my 97 for first 50k miles and heard the knock off and on but switched to the 15W-40 truck oils after that and never heard it again on the 97 which I used up to 80k miles.  Heard it when I first got my 02 in Sept 03 with 4k miles on it but I changed to the 15W-40 truck oils about 2k miles later and don't recall hearing it since then.  The camshaft side play knock is harmless and I never worried about it after I determined what it was.

My cam knock on both my 97 and 02 engines was never heard above a fast idle which I believe is because the centrifugal force on the cam chain at higher rpm tightens the cams in place keeping them from moving sideways.  I could feel the extra endplay on one camshaft on my 97 GS but never measured it or tried to shim it out.  Once I confirmed what my noise was I didn't worry about it

I doubt the centrifugal force has much to do with it. I think past ~2k there is so much more noise from the motor that you tend to have over lapping noises masking it.
Either that or the oil flow is much higher and the oil has to squirt out of the cam bearings and that oil dulls the sharp edges of the "clack" sound.
Coming to think of it, I've heard it on trailing throttle @ above 2500 for sure, but its been 12yrs since I sold that bike. So its a bit fuzzy.
