Hey everyone,
I'm new around here, got referred by a friend. I'm looking to replace my stock handlebars, partially due to damage they took from the previous owner, partially for style, and partly because the OEM part is currently on nation-wide backorder.
My issue is that, as this is my first bike, I'm having difficulty judging how to properly shop for a set of handlebars. I Don't want to stray too far from the original position, though if the choice were given to me I'd lower them a tad. I also want to be able to get a set of bar ends all in one go, and to keep the stock controls and throttle tube.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Welcome to the forum!
It sounds to me like you'd be happy with 'superbike' bars. I have them on my GS. They are slightly lower than the stock ones and very affordable.
Have a look at this link here for different bars (I did a search typing in '99 GS500E):
https://www.motosport.com/motorcycle/handlebars
And here for the actual superbike bars:

Motosport is also a great site for all kinds of other parts, both aftermarket and OEM. Bar ends though, (and even the bars too just for price shopping) I'd have a look on eBay.
Also, this section of the GSwiki would probably interest you. It talks about a bunch of different bars for the GS500.

Thanks, man! Yeah, after looking at the bars and that wiki page, superbike does look like what I'm looking for.
Out of curiosity though, especially since I've seen them a couple other places online with great reviews, if I were looking for that superbike profile, what position would I want to get for Renthal bars (e.g. https://www.motosport.com/renthal-road-bars-standard-78 or https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/renthal-street-handlebars-78)? Going with Superbike seems to simplify the matter, and I fou nd one a third of those Renthal bars to boot, but I wouldn't mind knowing, if only for the sake of it.
+1 for superbike bars. I have them as well and I really like them. Word of warning though, if you get the black ones, the gloss finish scratches kind of easily so be careful when installing them.
Poor ShowBiz, always being mistaken for a guy. I'm guilty of it too.
Hahaha, hey, it happens in the motorcycle internet world lol!!
