Title: passenger helmet
Post by: preardon on March 02, 2004, 12:40:25 AM
What is the best type of helmet to buy as a secondary helmet for occassional passengers. I would assume you would want something light and small so you can carry it on the bike if you are picking someone up. Face shield or no? What is everybody's opinion. Also, if anyone has an extra helmet they want to get rid of cheap, please let me know. I am in sothern California and can pick it up if you are too.
Thanks
Patrick

Take that extra person to get fitted properly or you might regret it.

Check out thrift stores for bargains if you have lots of time to shop.

Out of respect for your riders mushes, get a full faced helmet. They can face plant too. Size is a tough one. Larges will stretch a Med helmet, and Meds will not fit a Lg properly.

I would think that you care as much about your passenger as you do yourself.  Get thema properly fitting lid and let them keep it. As for people you don't regularly ride. Do you want to go through the expense of getting them a helmet?
Riding passengers that normally don't ride is a good way to have scratches put on your bike and riding gear. As someone who is not used to a bike or the way they turn ussually fights the pilot and tries to counter lean. I suggest only riding your honey and leaving the rest to either supply their own gear or not ride.

My 2 cents

it's kind of funny, but i first borrowed a friend's bieffe fullface atv helmet, till i could afford my own. it was painfully tight. then i bought a GMAX gm3x large. it fit alright, and my fiance wore the bieffe, which fit her good. then i upgraded to the gmax gm14x flipface helmet. we were testing helmet sizes and such, and i was going to buy her another that fit better, since weasel wanted his bieffe back and my 3x was too big for her. she tried on a large at the shop and said it fit good, so i figured her hair had shrank (mix black and white blood and you get a drop dead gorgeous girl with poofy hair) or something. so i ordered the 14x in large and figured she could wear my old large. nope.

The difference? cheek padding. the 3x doesn't have much cheek padding, but the large she tried on at the shop had DEVs and lots of cheek padding. my large 14x has lots of cheek padding, and it fits her alright. so, when she rides me, er, with me, I wear the backup helmet, and SHE wears the "good" helmet.
