Title: Bob Broussard Rocks!
Post by: jake42 on March 02, 2004, 08:41:31 AM
Just wanted to give my thanks and a board-wide thanks to Bob for doing the ignition advancers.

Turn around on mine was exactly one week and I"m in PA.

Thanks again.

dunno yet, the bike is still in pieces awaiting new jets and  air filter to go with my new advancer and V&H full system.

Even with only 5 degrees of added advance (from 12 to 17, non CA) I've found the bike to start up much better and it did solve a flat spot in my powerband.  Very satitsfied for what was a 5 dollar modification :) Now, it isn't the most magical special thing, mind you, but it is a nice, small mod.  Many thanks to Bob for doing this for us!

any negative exerience with it?

The lean jetting for the factory combined with the higher advance may cause detonation. Mine never showed any sign of that cos the jetting is stinking rich on mine by the time I put in the advancer. BTW it only make a difference at low revs... once you get 2500 rpm the blackbox advance is pretty much higher than the advancers advance.
Cool.

what is detonation?
and do I need to rejet after I put the new advancer on?

it makes a difference under 2500rpm...does it mean faster accel?...and smoother startup?

Detonation is where the fuel air mix blows up before spark. Very bad. But thankfully doesn't happen due to the low compression of the bike. Anyway an advancer will advance the spark and there is the chance that the fuel blows up before TDC - well it does blow before TDC but 5 degrees or 12 degrees before is about right to blow the fuel right at TDC. 17 might be more than ideal... however premium fuel and richer mixes burn more gradually and that will prevent detonation. Hence a 17 degree advance with premium gas will not let it detonate, as will a rich mix and 17 degree advance. Anyway on my gs I have the advancer and I run 87 in it. Nevre had a problem. I also jetted my bike on 87, and then just droppped in the advancer. If you want to be sure you dont hurt the motor... wait till its broken in and rejet it and advance it then. Someone has the formula for the 01+ jetting. Just use that.
Cool.
Srinath.

I have had mine installed for about a 1000 miles now with no ill effects or hints of detonation using crappy CA gas at mid-grade 89 octane :)

I also had the CA 5 degrees intial so going to 17 made a very noticeable difference in off the line power and roll ons under 5K.  Just day-to-day driveability is way better :thumb:
