Title: tachometer upgrade
Post by: the_63 on May 04, 2018, 03:33:07 AM
Hey guys,

Long time no see. I have been getting prepared to swap my mechanical tachometer over to an electric one. I'm sure I've seen a thread on this somewhere before but I can't find it

does anyone know how the electric tach gets its information. As far as I can tell from the wiring diagram the wires used to power it are from the dummy lights and has an extra wire that goes to the ignition.

Any help/insight would be much appreciated

Aftermarket Tach signal can vary between different instruments, Some need the tach wire, some can bleed tach signal fron the coil or even an inductor wound around the spark wire ( often with a resistor).
I used an ACEWELL as I have used them a fair bit on race bkes, but there are heaps. The Acewell can use a 5v tach signal wire, coil bleed or an inductor wire which is why I have favored them. It is in the project pages under xxxBundberg projectxxx.
There are some very nice analogue electronic ones in the project area though.

Why?

Compare the wiring diagrams between the Es that don't have an electric tacho and the Fs that do.

Or am I just thinking too hard  :icon_question: :icon_question: :icon_question:

You need to say which model for the gs to be sure of the tach wire coding.
On the 04 and05 it is a black/red wire and there is a bullet connector under the tank up near the front. I have had some trouble with the signal from it powering my digital tach. It MAY be a differential voltage on ( ie 12-5v for 7V) that I have encountered before. Haven't determoined that for sure yet.

My bike is a 1999, and the clocks I've got are from a K5. The wiring diagram for the K5 shows that there are 2 more components coming from the ignition control unit, my concern now is that these additional components are essential to the tachometer reading correctly. Plus I still don't know where I need to tap the red/black wire into.

My wiring diagrams show the 99 is a mechanical tach. The 05 ( same as mine ) has a wire from the ECU for the tach the 99 does not. You need an aftermarket tach that will pick up the signal from another source if you want electronic ( coil, coil differential or inductor from the spark wire).
