Hi all! New to the forum and the GS500
I found a partially disassembled 2008 gs500f on Craigslist today and a friend and I are going to pick it up to put back together. How does $400 sound? If everything is in decent condition I think we can make our money back in parts if it doesn't work out.

$400 is something you almost assuredly can make back in parts, so I say go for it. If the reassembly doesn't go well, part it out!
Also yeah, post pics when you get it and post progress updates, people love a good project thread lol.

hey guys! I'm c3powill's friend! Can't wait to get the rest of this bike together, it's my first bike ever, so the prospect of building it "back from the ashes" and riding it out has me really pumped! Happy to be part of the team.

If something goes wrong you will have no problem getting $400 out of that bike. Especially if the frame is titled and the tank is in good condition.
Yes, the frame is titled and tank looks to be in really great condition as well.
Apparently, it was taken apart in order to do a 10,000 mile service, which puzzled me because this seems unnecessary. It become known that the bike was purchased by a young man going to school for mechanics. His father recently passed away, and he is now moving away soon and didn't want to, or didn't have time to, rebuild the bike.
I think he must have been eager to get into the disassebly, being a new mechanic, and once his father passed away he lost interest in completing it. The man who put the bike up for sale was just a family friend, although we did meet the son while we were there.

So our first question is:
How do we know if the camshafts are aligned properly?
It looks like the markings on the right side intake cam are not present, but they are on the left side. It looks like the PO may have removed them for one reason or another. We're not really sure how far he got with disassembly.
Also, is there anything attached to the carburetors we can get rid of? It looks like there is a lot of unnecessary crap.

If the bike is a California spec one, you can basically remove the entire secondary air injection system and just cap the ports and it'll still work. Lots of people here have done it.
UPDATE:
Today we had our first big day to look over everything and determine what we need. The carbs are in great condition and found out that the pairing system was what we we're looking at earlier and found out there is a way to safely remove it, if we decide to do so.
Unfortunately there isn't much more for us to do until the cylinder head gasket and the other base gasket come in, which won't be until the end of the month... Also we were having some trouble finding where everything goes on the wiring harness, or whether or not we have everything we need. If anyone has any wiring expertise it would be greatly appreciated, or if you know where to get a full set pretty cheap. That would work too if we need to. Thanks for keeping up! We'll post more updates and pics as they come!!
In another thread it was suggested that you start wiring from the rear and go forward. Might help with the harness you have, but I don't have any experience with it myself. Someone who does can confirm this.

i picked up an uncut harness on ebay for $20 a few weeks ago. There were a few to choose from. :whisper:
It looks like the pieces that were "missing" we're actually attached to the engine. With new battery in place, it seems all lights work well except for the speedo bulb.
We took off the cylinders and found a missing base gasket, so added that to the mail list. All parts should be in by Friday. Any good recources on cam timing?
Hey guys! Quick update for ya!! We are in the final stages of bringing this baby back to life, we're just waiting on the base gasket and head gasket to get this engine back together. So far we got a new battery, new grips (finally), new clutch and brake levers (previous ones were bent due to a crash), new gauge cluster lights, and we got all of the wiring mapped out and zip-tied out of the way after we plugged everything up and tested all of the lights and electronics!! Last couple of steps are to just get this engine back in, and figure out where all of these miscellaneous bolts and screws go. All in all, we're only down about $550 and less than 10 hours of work, and this bike is almost ready to ride!!
