I'm replacing my chain this coming weekend, and while I was cleaning out my abhorrently filthy front sprocket case, I got to checking out the circlip. It seems pretty rusted out, and I've gotten in the habit of replacing anything I don't trust on principle ever since this bike came into my posessi ol n half a year back.
Thing is, new OEM circlips for the front sprocket (part# 08331-31256) seem to be non-existent. Should I trust my current circlip until it falls apart in me, or is there a suitable replacement from another model year/manufacturer that will do the trick?
Haven't tried to get one but I would be surprised if it isn't a part readily available in bearing shops etc. Or at least one that will work as well. ID, thickness and installed shoulder height that's high enough is all you need.
And yes , it is an aweful way to hold a sprocket opn...
08331-31256 is readily available. Less that $1.
That said, the rust is likely just surface rust. As long as it clamps just clean it off and reuse it.
I can't seem to find anywhere where it's in stock. I'm probably just being a nervous Nelly about it, though. I'll just be sure to clean it good.

I went to a bearing supply store and got some 25mm external circlips which fitted perfectly.
I never re-use circlips!
