Hi everyone i'm new to this forum.
So recently i changed my clutch cover gasket because of oil leaks and that i was finished.
But around a week later my crank seal behind the signal generator started leaking on the same side.
I bought a replacement seal but is it possible to change the seal by only removing the electronic parts behind the suzuki logo without removing the whole clutch cover?
Since i don't want to drain the oil and all again.
You think you can manage to lay the bike on the left side.? you can lay it on the left side, let the oil sump over to that side, and then take the cover off to change the seal. you don't need to lay the bike flat, just at like a steep angle.
just remember when you lift the bike let it sit upright for like a few hours to get the oil away from the cylinders.
I don't remember if you can remove that seal from the outside... i'd have to look at it, you can try not like if you mangle it its a huge loss. you already have a new one.
By "take the cover off" do you mean the whole clutch cover or only the cover with the suzuki logo on it?
OK, so the signal generator is on the right side, and the clutch is on the left.
Which side are we talking about?
On the right side, there's a little round cover with "SUZUKI" on it that can be removed by taking out just three small bolts. That cover does not seal oil. Beneath it is the signal generator which consists of a rotor and two pickup coils that are mounted to a plate. That's not the clutch side :)
If THAT is the side you are talking about, then that seal cannot be replaced without removing the entire right side cover, which normally necessitates draining the oil. If you have not had this side cover off, then there's a pretty good chance the gasket will get destroyed taking it apart and if that happens there's also a pretty good chance that getting the old gasket off of the cover will be quite hard. This is not really a trivial job.
Of course if you just got left and right mixed up and you mean you actually recently replaced the RIGHT side (not clutch side) gasket then yes you can just drain the oil, pull the cover off, then replace the crank seal.
Be forewarned, it may still leak. Mine does. A lot. And I did replace the seal, and that gasket, one after the other, like you are likely stuck doing, so I know this process well. Mine still leaks just not quite as much as before. And it pretty much only leaks when the oil is properly topped up. If I let the oil run down to the bottom of the crosshatch on the dipstick then it doesn't leak. I am not sure that seal is really capable of keeping mine from leaking.
It is the right side with the Suzuki logo and in recently replaced the gasket. I say clutch gasket because the clutch plates are on the right side.
Cant i just pry the old seal out? Since It can be seen with the cover still closed
Well it does push out from the inside, so in theory you can pull it out from the outside but the only way I can see to do that without damaging the aluminum seating surface is with the crankshaft removed. I guess if you have some nylon tool that you can use to pry from the edge that won't scratch the engine case, then maybe? I think it's going to prove impossible.
It's pressed in. It's not just stuck in there loosely. It takes knocking it out with a socket from the inside using a hammer.
Then the problem would be getting the new seal in. I guess anything's possible but it'll be way, way easier to just drain the oil and pull the cover if you had it off recently.
Yes that is true but i don't want to go trough the hassle of changing the gasket again...
But since its the better way i'm just gonna order a new gasket as well then
you don't need to replace the gasket unless somehow you glued it on.
you can reuse the "old" gasket, as long as it comes off cleanly. Mine did because I put a layer of anti-seize on one side of the gasket before putting it all together.
Thanks!
i will try it tomorrow morning
So i removed the seal but it leaved a bit of rubber residue. i removed as much as is could with heating and acetone but it still remains a lottle would it bother leaving it like this and put the new seal in?
That residue is probably not from the seal, probably from someone previously putting in a seal with RTV.
If it was me, I'd remove it all and further make sure the mating surface is clean and pristine. Why go to all of this effort just to put it together and have it leak?
Of course, when I did mine, I went to all that effort, and even did everything as right as you can, and it still leaks.
Cleaned it to the metal now. Do you recommend new RTV ?
Nevermind it is already in. Buying some more oil tomorrow and we'll see how it goes
Update: reused the old gasket drove for a while and when i looked in the garage in the evening we'll guess what i saw a little drop from the gasket... Tightened the bolts more so ill wait another day. If it still leaks i Will change it for a liquid gasket :woohoo:
Good part is it doesn't leak from the seal anymore
The black residue will be from the seal itself, they degrade and go hard. Not uncommon to see them break up in the way you describe when they are knocked out.
As for reusing klingersil gaskets and expecting them to seal effectively every time...........all I will say is good luck with that one :D
Don't overtighten the bolts to compensate for a leaking gasket....you will end up in a world of pain!
