Hey Everyone! Feels good to be back on here. Hope y'all are great!
This is mostly just a post to prevent others from feeling as dumb as I feel right now, so if you're not having a strange starting issue at the moment you can safely ignore this post.
Went to start: "click" from the solenoid and starter, nothing else. Great, dumb sealed battery was supposed to be better than this but I'll charge it. Charged overnight, went to start: "Click". OK, full charging circuit test, no problems. OK, solenoid then? Jump the solenoid with a screwdriver, "Click". OK, bad battery? Jump from a car (just getting a little more sketchy with each step here, lol), "click". Well heck, must be a bad connection somewhere or a bad starting motor right? This happened while it was sitting for like a week! What gives? Fine, I'll try to push start to check a bad starter. Pushing on gravel didn't work, but my dad showed up and asked what was wrong so I went "I dunno, thinking a bad connection or starter" and went to demonstrate the click--but the starter motor turned over easy and it fired right up! :woohoo:
But wait, what was the issue? My best guess is that the starter somehow ended up in exactly the wrong spot and that my half-attempt at push starting managed to budge it. Or something. :dunno_black: Anyways, all I'm saying is if you're getting a click and no response from the starter, just budge it around a little bit before you freak out and pull it out!

Was this the click noise?
Same thing happened to me. Got a new battery and it solved the issue. Got one of those motobatt ones. They have four terminals and sell a lead you can run off the other pair to charge stuff while you're riding and charge the battery with too. Handy.
This is the beginning of the end for the starter. You can probably tear it down and clean it, use some 600 grit sandpaper on the commutator, blow compressed air throughout, lube it and put it back together and get another few years out of it but I bet it will progressively start to leave you stranded more and more often.

Well dang that's good to know, thanks for the heads up!
mine did the same thing, engine didnt rotate a inch, but a push to start at the gravel did the thing, thought the engine was jammed since my carb overleaked day before
