Title: oil leak
Post by: jangofett on March 03, 2004, 01:41:32 PM
I have developed a leak on the left side of my bike. It is right at the very bottom of the case cover. It is dripping pretty slow, but I would like to fix it. Is it a pretty easy fix? I have the Clymer book, so I guess I will try to do this. Any tips or warnings? Thanks!

Chances are ... its chain lube.
Cool.
Srinath.

Nope, it is a oil leak, although it would have been nice if it was chain lube. Have you changed one of these gaskets before Srinath? If so, how was it?

the gasket is under $20 from the dealer.  It took me more time to get the remains of the old gasket off, than it did to install the new one.   Remember to eiter drain your oil, or put your bike on its side before you start.

The factory gasket will be stuck on like crazy. Get some gasket remover, a gasket scraper, and some patience. Other than that, there is nothing to it.

You'll need some gasket maker/sealer for the area where the alternator wires run through. And a small torque wrench for those little bolts.

And, it's not coming from the clutch shaft seal or the layshaft seal, behind the sprocket cover?

That would be the first thing I checked. Its the easiest (and is the worse case...).

I am pretty sure it is the gasket on the crankcase cover. You can see where a little of the gasket is protruding out and it is split, that is where the oil is dripping but I will check the other things you guys mentioned as well. I guess i could take this and have it done, but I want to learn to fix things on this bike myself. I just have to get over my fear of trying.
