Title: Fuel tank/ Fuel pump accuracy
Post by: N@B on August 19, 2018, 11:31:43 AM
Hi all,
I've been noticing my fuel ups are suspiciously large, for not having switched over to the reserve fuel. 200 miles in and i'm putting over 16 or even some times 17 litres in to fill the tank to the filler neck. Yesterday was 16.5 liters with the bike on the side stand. With only 15.7 litres of fuel before supposedly running out and having toswitching to reserve this feels wrong, has anyone else had similar or am I just being diddled by the fuel companies?
P.S 2005 k5 model and UK based
PPS. I'm definitely sure that the petcock is set to on and not reserve and that the reserve works as should, having recently needed it.

Service book says you've got a 20 litre (4.4 UK gallon tank) so at say, 60mpg, you should get about 260miles out of it from brimmed to empty.

Sounds like your bike is doing ok!

I'm happy with fuel consumtpion (My riding style is hardly gentle) and range (I'm taking it from Englands south coast to Scottland soon),
I was wondering more about fuel pump accuracy (I have found my local Shell garage consistenly say they have given out more than there should be space for, while supermarket pumps would say I get a lot better economy.)
Or alternatively whether the reserve is over stated (In which case i should be wary of my range when switching to it).
Was wondering whether either of these is just to be expected? It has been bugging me since i got the bike in February and never really noticed it with my smaller cbf125, though that could be fuel pump innaccuracy is less visible when filling a smaller tank.

I think the weights & measures folk get awful sour if a pump isn't at least 51% or so correct.

I had a job in a Total petrol station twelve years ago and the pumps did get checked fairly regularly, at least in Suffolk. South coast petrol has always seemed mysteriously cheaper given that you lot are a captive market and have all the money :)

I switch to reserve when the bike starts feeling jumpy. this is usually when I want to overtake someone and have to drop back, switch, wait a few seconds for the floats to fill and have another go. presumably whilst being laughed at...

Naked UK K4 here: my figures averaged over about 23,000mls are roughly 56mpg depending on how hard caned and length of journeys etc. Doubt pump accuracy is a major prob - weights & measures in the UK are ferocious and spot checks are frequently carried out. Some regular longer distance car drivers insist there is a difference between petrol brands and that the super unleaded improves mileage considerably - just made my bike run hotter and ting ting tingier so don't recommend personally.

If you can be *rsed then you can squeeze an extra 2 litres in past the filler neck, but it takes forever 'cos you have to dribble the petrol in really slowly (best to fill on the centre stand) - I only bother when a 200 mile+ journey planned myself. FTR, think 50 miles on reserve and maybe 60 if you drive like a granny then its fumes and prayers...

Happy trails  :D
