Title: Bike won't start after replacing magneto cover gasket
Post by: dyh475 on August 25, 2018, 04:57:07 PM
I just replaced the magneto cover gasket on my '09 because it was leaking. When I tried to start it afterwards I get a short whirl sound like the starter is trying to move and then a bunch of clicks from the relay. I had warmed it up a little before I did this so I know it was working before I replaced it.

The kickstand is up so it's not that. The only few things I can think it could be is that:
1. I messed up the clutch somehow when I took the sprocket cover off(the clutch pushrod fell out when I pulled it off but I don't think that would hurt anything). When I have the clutch pulled in while in gear the wheel won't turn and from my understanding it should. I also can't make the pushrod move but I don't know if it should or not. From what I understand it should be able to start if it's in neutral regardless if the clutch is functional or not, just so long as the lever is pulled in.
2. I fried something. I set the cover on the stator a few times and the magnets stuck to the coil , I don't know if that would hurt it or not. The battery is also down to 10 volts and I tried jumping it from a friend's bike to no avail.
3. I messed up the starter gear inside of the magneto cover. It popped out of place and everything I found said to just stick it back in there and make sure the teeth were well meshed.

If anyone has some ideas or experience with a problem like this please let me know.

The clicking sound from the solenoid is indicative of a flat battery and explains the 10v reading.

It pulls in with a click, the motor steals the limited amount of power and the solenoid drops out with a click........and the cycle repeats.

Fully charge the battery and try again, or better still fully charge the battery then take it to a shop and get it load tested in case it's on its way out.

If you haven't disturbed the clutch adjustment there is no reason for it to be affected and those starter gears are a loose fit and not retained when the cover is off.

Any idea how the battery could've gotten drained? I've never had a problem with it before and I had it running just a few hours before all of this.

Dead R@R is normally the cause. or you broke the small ground connection to the battery that ties into the main line.

Charge it up and go from there. If there is an issue with the battery or charging system it will soon become obvious  :dunno_black:

It seems that the cause was the battery. I jumped it one last time and she fired up. Few days after it wouldn't start if it sat for more than a few minutes but now everything seems back to normal. :dunno_black:
