Title: What's the highest millage GS out there?
Post by: TundraOG on October 30, 2018, 08:27:56 AM
Just watched a video about a man who rode over one million miles on his Harley Davidson, and it got me thinking. Now, the GS is certainly no 1800cc low revving cruiser, but what's the most anyone has ever ridden on a single GS?
I currently stand proud at 107 thousand KM (about 66.4 K miles) on the original engine, and I know a guy here who clocked about 100,000 miles (160K KM) on his. I'm sure this number can go higher. What have you heard about?

Despite 17 years of use and some abuse, my GS has a modest 65K Kilometer on the clock, circa 40K Miles, however it should be a little more, perhaps 70,000 or 75,000 Km (43K to 47K Miles) because I've rode her at least a year with no speedo cable.

Have a 95 parts bike with 76,000 mi. Rear cam chain guide broke.

Currently riding 2002 with 61,000 mi.

My 2008 GS5F has 78,500kms on it currently. I use it pretty much everyday. When people follow me they say it blows smoke out the exhaust on overrun. The engine still feels strong so hopefully it has a while left in it.

My 90's got 118,000km on it, still going strong. It had a top end rebuild at 90k though.

My 48K mile 89 used to blow liquid oil/gas/water/carbon/other out the exhaust at anything over 4k. The oil was leaving, but not burning because it wasn't hot enough, so never looked like smoke, would splatter your hand with dots of a black mix of everything though.
Yea got to near 50k mile. Not anything near the highest. If I recall, even then GSJack was on my heels with the 80K milers or he may have beaten me already and that's just from this forum that I knew of.
I had also heard of a girl who ran 100K+ on an 89 which was rebuilt under warranty in 1990 by her brother who was a dealer mechanic - and I have that motor. Supposedly 100K miles and didn't use a drop of oil.
Cool.
Buddha.

My 2007 has just under 110,000 kilometers on it.
It's my very day commuter machine - about 360 ks per week.
So far so good.

Crazy thing is if you pay to have your shims checked every 4k you would spend more on valves that the bike cost new in about 50K miles.

and if you paid the dealer for all of the other routine maintenance, it would be 2 bikes!

this is why ya gotta do your own maintenance.

111k kms or 70k mi.
2006 naked bike.

Two faulty pick up coils, first at 20k kms after had dropped the  bike, then bought a second hand pickup.time for new at 110k kms...
A broken tps at 90k kms, just unplugged it and ok.

Two valve checks,first at 45k kms---changed 1 shim,second check at 90k,everything ok.

That"s all.

My 89 has 57000 miles and goes well despite lower than ideal compression .... shims are due to be checked  but it keeps plugging along despite the low compression and still does 95 mph without drama ... and it thus far dependable . Bought for 450 quid about a year ago ,,, bargain i thunk ...I would ride it anywhere without worry , no bad noises , no smoke out the back , starts in all weathers , makes me grin in twisty bits ....

GSJack has one GS500 that crossed 100,000 miles and another that made it to around 90,000. I remember another forum post a few years back about a GS500 that had severe engine problems shortly after 100,000 miles.
All of these bikes were 100% or nearly 100% stock as Suzuki made the bike. Still, we never seem to hear about GS500s with 110,000 or 120,000+ miles like we do for more modern Suzuki designs like SVs and Vstroms. We also don't see any ultra high mileage bikes with aftermarket exhausts, K&N filters, and re-jets.

If you diligently keep up on maintenance and don't modify your bike your GS may get to the 100,000 mile (161,000 kilometer) club. Just don't expect much more than that without a rebuild or replacement of the top end of the motor.

I have 41,000 miles (66,000 km) on my GS. So a long ways to go to break any records.
