Title: Suggestions for bolt repair

OK this has been a problem for a while and I need to do something about it.

In the centre of the rear fender is a bolt and a metal top hat washer, that fixes the fender to the subframe. It appears to screw in directly into the subframe however it appears that this thread is stripped. I tried lock tight but it didn't hold.

Now I'm wondering if I should use some sort of jb weld type of material to attach it permanently. It is important that this is fixed securely because it holds on my after market GIVI subframe for my top box.

Is there some more obvious solution than JB weld, should I in get it properly welded?

It's a bit tricky because the bolt has to first go through the GIVI frame, then through the plastic fender, then there's a small gap before it disappears inside the box subframe which is now stripped.

Is tapping it one size up and using a larger bolt/timesert/helicoil not an option?


In the past I've had mild success using JB weld to fill a hole, then tapping the JB weld, but if it needs to hold any kind of weight/tension it'll just pull out again.

Can you drill it all the way through and put a longer bolt with a locking nut on the other side?

How much can you drill it out? You might be able to try a Nutsert / rivnut depending on what flavour you wish to call them.

As you can see from this shot, the main load bearing point is the pivot near the blinker, so the bolt in question doesn't really take any stress as it just gets pushed into the Frame although it is subject to vibration.

@Nudie It looks like there is enough room to drill through a put a nut on the other end of the box subframe. This looks like a good solution as it's possible to get a drill under and up without needing to remove anything so this is the solution that I'll go with.
