Title: Oil light dim when bike is running
Post by: Higglypiff42 on January 08, 2019, 05:20:20 PM
I have a 2007 gs500f, and when I turn the ignition on the oil light illuminates as it should, but then it stays on but very dimly while the bike is running. I just recently changed out my clutch plates and put new oil in it and a new oil filter. The oil is not low BTW. Thanks in advanced for your answers!

I also forgot to mention that this happened right after I replaced the clutch plates, so it's very possible I messed something up, I just don't know what would cause the light to be dim like it is.

If you unplug the cluster cable plug you could measure the resistance of the bike side wiring - between the green + yellow wire (your model wiring colours may vary - may be easier to pull the lamp out) and to the chassis ground. if you get a lowish ohms value (say 10-100 ohms) that could indicate that the wiring may have pinched insulation to the chassis somewhere.

In terms of functionality - the light will likely go hard bright when the switch operates, but it's like that pesky check engine light being on when you know what the problem is..

Oil galley is under the clutch plates and just in front of it. A piece of gasket material in it may choke off enough to light up the thing. You have to get it fixed obviously, it wont live long with low pressure.

Now does it stay dim at cold start up ? cos the bike makes like 30-40 psi when cold at 3-4K rpm and when fully up to temp it drops to under 5, so that light is set to trigger at under 5psi. So when cold if you're making under 5, its seriously low.

Cool.

Buddah, the light is off when cold.

Kiwi, I might try that. It could be something like that because I've done a little bit of custom wiring on this bike.

Kiwi, I just did your test and I'm getting between 10 - 11 ohms. I made sure I have a good connection and everything. Now time to try and find the culprit.
