Title: What's with all the white wheels?
Post by: sanityfree on March 04, 2004, 04:07:07 PM
Was there a year that they came like that, are they aftermarket wheels, are they repainted, WHAT'S GOING ON????

Oh, and has anybody painted their rotors and/or calipers? i like the bright colored look, and I'm thinking of doing it, but the jury's still out on what color...

I'm not the original owner, but I think they came stock on my '89.

painting your rotors would be a BAD idea...

if you painted the outside part of the rotors (where the brake hits) it prolly wouldn't stop very well for awhile, but eventually the paint would rub off. You can paint the calipers, Im actually plannin on doin that too mine sometime too. Make sure you use brake paint, or some other hi-temp paint cuz the heat will make regular stuff bubble and peel. I used VHT Brake Paint on my car brakes and it looked good/didn't peel. Hope this helps

Oh yeah, as for color I'd go wit either a minor color to ur bike (like if its white wit blue decals use blue) or if u wanna get real sneaky paint it red or gold like brembos or some other high end brakes :)

Aside from the problem of not being able to stop while the paint wore off the rotors, all that paint will gum up and ruin the brake pads.

Warning! Squidifying a GS500 (ANY GS500) will get you snickered at by both people who know better and other posers as well.

Sanityfree, you WERE only going to paint the brake rotor carriers, weren't you?  I've been considering painting my black carriers ('96) gold or bronze.  I've seen pix of some GS's that are stock this way.  Unfortunately, my rotors aren't detachable from the carriers (like some evidently are; probably the gold ones), so that means a lot of masking.  I don't think silver, bronze or gold is squiddy.  While I was at it, I was going to paint the calipers the same color.

my black rotor carriers have a bunch of rust... those little circle things holding the rotors on are pretty rusty and crappy.  Masking it shouldn't be so bad, just need to use smaller pieces of tape.  Could always get the nice wide blue painter's tape.  Oh well, that's what I get for buying a bike that was stored outside in the northeast!

umm, i'm not exactly sure what you mean by brake rotor carries, but i DO know better than to paint the part where the pads grip.

i was talking about painting the inside of the rotors, and the calipers, something other than that dull black color they are now. maybe some kind of silver...

I actually like the white wheels.
I think they look really nice with a black bike.   :thumb:

Hmmm - funny thing, my wife hates 'em... says they look really 80s... oh well...   :dunno:

The rotor carrier is the part that is painted black or gold (in some years). I do have a couple of rotors with the gold carrier if interested.

someone is giving me the white wheels off of his 99 GS, and he's going to mount my rubbers on them for free. i have to take my wheels off, and take my rotors (carriers) off. i think i'm going to paint my rotor carriers and calipers gold, or maybe silver. can someone recommend a paint brand to me? something that'll look good and last, but not cost an arm and a leg and a firstborne child...

also, if i like the white wheels, i'll be selling my old uhh, gray(?) wheels, if anyone wants them. the front wheel is somewhat damaged. i'll post pictures sometime.

I have an 89'. Over the winter I had my frame and wheels powdered. The frame was done in a semi-flat black, and the wheels are a gloss black. When I purchased the bike both wheels were damaged, so I got a new front and got a rear from an 89 GSXR 750. Most of you know that this is a wider rim. Also as we speak my tank and plastic are in for painting. I am going with a metalic silver. I will get some pics up when I get the money pit back together.
