Title: GS500 (07) Starter Motor Location?
Post by: Gargoyle7 on April 12, 2019, 08:10:39 PM
Hi Guys,

After testing my battery, solenoid and fuse; I'm convinced that the starter motor is to blame for the single click that occurs when I attempt to start it.
Is the starter motor behind the starter clutch cover or can it be accessed from somewhere else? Also to rebuild the motor, what will I need to replace besides the motor components themselves (ie gaskets, engine oil)?

Thanks in advance!

Starter is located under the cover on the top of the engine case.

If not replacing the starter assy., minimum are brushes, brush springs, commutator, and oil seal.  Should probably change bearing too.  However, I believe the commutator isn't available unless getting one from an electrical component supplier.  One would need to know the dimensions of the part when new.

Ideally, one would also replace the armature windings as well as the thrust washer(s) and/or shims. If going this far or if a commutator can't be sourced, the armature is available with new windings and a commutator.  Otherwise, enameled copper wire will be needed for the armature windings.  I don't recall the gauge required.  Info can be found online or can be measured on the existing armature.

At this point though, it would likely be more cost effective to purchase an assembly instead.
