Title: what parts do i need to convert my F to a naked?
Post by: BikerBoy on April 13, 2019, 01:16:34 AM
So when I was changing the spark plugs (which were jet black- nice!) I got a little handsy with the fairings and an already cracked section of fairing, right under the turn signal came out. I've decided to convert it, because the fairings are already in bad shape anyway.

Following this thread (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=21212.0) which of these parts are neccessary for the bucket headlight look?

SV650 Headlight with housing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/03-09-Suzuki-SV650-Headlight-headlamp-Lamp-OEM-B3504/153405467681?fits=Model%3ASV650&hash=item23b7adac21:g:zOUAAOSwJoxcgC4L

A few different options on brackets - which of these would go best on a 37mm fork for a gs500 with an sv650 headlamp?

Mounting Bracket (not sure why Ill need this, but the other thread said I would) : https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-1990-90-SUZUKI-GS500E-GS-500-OEM-FRONT-HEADLIGHT-MOUNTING-BRACKET-STAY/163372025183

I would get the third option on the bracket since it's nice and new. As long as you get the right bolts to thread into the headlight housing then it'll work fine. You might wanna get rubber washers to put between the brake and the headlight to prevent vibrations if the bracket doesn't come with them. I'm not sure what plug the SV650 headlight uses but you might need to solder a different plug on if it's different.

Other than that you should be good for the headlight. I run a fancy LED round headlight on my 06 GS500F and it looks great

Edit: and you'll wanna get some rubber to put between the bracket and the fork tubes if it doesn't come with them as well  :thumb:

I like the way the new one looks too, though now Im a little nervous about not having a place to put the turn signals on the bracket. On that original post he used mounting brackets like the one from the first link, so he could mount the headlight with the rabbit ears and use the extra hole on the bracket for the turn signal. Good idea on the rubber washers too. Where would I get rubber to put around the forks where the bracket goes?

I also bought a K&N airbox filter and new mikuni jets (20, 65, 142.5) and new carb rebuild kits to get my bike purrrrring again  :woohoo:

Im gonna take out the brass caps to get to the fuel/air mixture screws, some have said I need a EZ out drill bit set and impact drivers. Do I really need both of these things, or could I get by with one or the other? I'd rather not spend money on stuff I may only need once.

Where do the turn signals mount, on the bracket right? or the forks?  :bs: :dunno_black: :technical:

You can buy rubber sheets from Amazon. Just cut them to fit. Same with the washers, just cut them to the correct size and drill a hole for the bolt. I was able to mount my turn signals to the headlight bracket

Cool, the rubber on the 94 gs500e brackets still look really good so I think Im good on that. I see how the turn signals mount easily too.

How would I get these brackets on, I guess I need to take off the handlebars to do this? Can anyone describe this operation for me please, I cant find any threads on it (probably because its basic for most people)

Sorry for the late reply but the part that mounts to the fork tube should split into 2 pieces.

No worries, I actually went with these brackets (https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/keUAAOSw5T9atnZH/s-l1600.jpg) They definitely dont split apart like the other ones I posted, it looks like I just have to start wrenching on the handlebars to take them off so the brackets can slide on, but that shouldnt be too hard right? Seems pretty self explanatory. Hopefully the handlebars just come off so I dont have to mess with the fork oil or seals and its a quick job.

Anyone know if I need to buy a headlight bucket housing for this sv650 light? This has screws in the side already so if I mount it on the bracket (without buying a bucket housing) I'd need bigger screws. It also has 2 screws just in the outer part (not the bulb) about 120 degrees apart, so I suppose those are the ones that screw into the seperate "bucket" housing.

heres my bulb right now: (https://i.imgur.com/lx33Whc.jpg)

bucket housing I found on ebay that I might buy if I need to (on the right)

Ah yes, those brackets you will need to slide them on from the top I'm pretty sure. At least that's what it looks like, I've never messed with those kind before. Get that bucket housing and you should be good  :thumb:

Thanks for all the advice, I used those rubber sheets between the forks and the ebay bracket I bought (didnt want to fiddle with the forks right now to get the OEM brackets on) and the headlight feels solid as a rock, and looks much better now.  :thumb:
