Title: Front wheel axle reinstallation
Post by: Kookas on May 27, 2019, 09:45:25 AM
Hi, can anyone advise which side the flat axle spacer belongs on at the front?

Also, there seems to be way too much thread at the end of the axle. It's like this spacer should be twice as wide as it is. I have an EU model so the end nut is capped with no pin. I can't get it even close to the spacer.

I thought it would be the easy part, I didn't even notice this spacer when I removed the axle I don't think. It's not the disk brake one that's much wider.

After an hour or so of googling, I found that this spacer goes next to the capped self-lock nut (before the fork leg). The thread is just taken up when the nut is tightened to ~50Nm (it looks like there is not enough space in the cap).

I'm guessing you mean the thick washer? It goes next to the dome nut as you've found.

If a quick googling is correct, it should be 32mm OD, 12.5mm ID and 4.5mm thick. Might be worth checking in case it's been replaced?

I always find that it looks like too much thread, then at at the last moment of torquing it up the thread is finally all taken up and everything is held solidly.

That diagram would have been pretty handy. My service manual diagram, and the diagrams I could find on the internet, looked like this:

Note the unfortunate missing washer (#8 on yours). My service manual is 1998 I think, so maybe the front axle setup changed at some point.

Some more Googling and comparing to my Haynes manual suggests that the split pin variation is only found in the US.

As far as our UK front wheel history goes, up to 2000 bikes use a nyloc flanged nut with no washer, then 2001+ use the dome nut with the thick washer.

I tend to trust the parts fiches from motorcyclespareparts.eu (others available) more than my manual as you can select your bike's year.

Yeah, probably worth mentioning that whilst I have a pre-00s manual, I've got an 07 F. I think the manual came with the bike.
