Title: Bike Bogs down when accelerating and runs fine with choke
Post by: dwoolley on October 18, 2019, 04:59:29 PM
Hi Everyone,

My '92 GS500E idles and starts fine, but when I'm riding it I'll give it a little gas and it will start to bog down. I then have been giving it a little choke just to get me home and it runs normally with the choke on. I doubt it is a carb issue because I had that done by a shop at the beginning of the season and have run non-oxy with seafoam in it all year. I put in about a gallon when I was low one time just to get me home. I ride it to work everyday so the gas hasn't been sitting at all. I'm thinking I might need to adjust the fuel mixture screw. I checked that there isn't any air leaks at the boots, but didn't expect their to be any since this sounds like a fuel issue to me. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

If it runs ok on choke but not when not on choke, assuming you are talking about FULLY WARMED UP, then it is definitely something wrong with the carbs.

If you truly had it set up by a pro, then it's not idle mixture causing this. It's most likely a vacuum leak if I had to guess, one of the slides sticking, you didn't spray carb cleaner in it did you? because a hole in the diaphragm could do this and that's easily caused by spraying carb cleaner in the carb.

FWIW a properly running GS will require choke to run when it's cold, but mostly to idle. You can take it to half choke after a few minutes and maybe turn choke all the way off after the first three or four miles. A lot of folks think the choke is just for starting and it should run without it once it's started and this leads to a lot of misguided wrong adjustments. All I'm saying is, this might be normal.
