Title: Protecting bare metal with clear coat
Post by: Masterflies on January 17, 2020, 09:38:35 AM
Dear Friends,

I know it's maybe not the best idea, but I almost finished my GS500 project (will provide report soon), and I really like how bare metal looks like, so I'm trying to find some clear coat which could be put directly on metal and isolate it completely from any possible atmospheric exposure. I will try to do this with the tank, so please kindly share your experience.

Regarding that, I found the following products:

1. Permalac solutions - I've heard really good feedback on this one.

2. POR-15 solutions (e.g. POR-15 Top Coat or 2K Industrial Urethane)

3. Pantarol-A (from Germany, so I really wonder it it's a good stuff)

Whatever feedback or experience would be appreciated )

One other forum user had clear powder coat applied, I'd say that's the best possible way to do it.

POR-15 topcoat may not adhere to the bare metal. Actually it will be difficult to get any type of paint to adhere to bare metal. A catalyzed urethane clear would be the best to try, but adhesion is going to be tricky. That's what primer is usually for.

This might interest you - I stripped the paint off my gas tank, and really like the look.

I had the tank powder coated clear, and it's worked mostly OK.  After a couple years, there were hairline scratches especially where the seat rubbed again the rear of the tank.  This allowed for a spiderweb of fine rust lines to form under the clear coat.

If you use some urethane, I'd try acetone on the bare metal right before painting to get rid of any surface grease.  The advantage of some paint system is that if you get any scratches, you could probably sand it down and repaint.  Re-doing the powder coat is a bit more of a headache.

Thank you man, looks that I found some interesting stuff which is epoxy/urethane 2k clear coat, probably will try to get it. The bike is almost ready ) http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=73131.0
